Terem Moffi transfer: Why Hamburger SV makes more sense than Hull City

Terem Moffi’s next move could take him to Germany, with Hamburger SV emerging as suitors alongside Hull City, Afrik-Foot reports.

Moffi is expected to leave OGC Nice this summer after a difficult spell at the French club, and Porto failed to sign him permanently.

Hull City have also been linked with the Nigerian, but that option appears to have lost momentum. A source close to the Championship club told Footy-Africa that Hull are not actively pursuing a permanent deal for Moffi.

Hamburger SV, meanwhile, have gone further. The Bundesliga club have opened talks with Nice, and reports from Germany now indicate that negotiations are at an advanced stage, with the transfer nearing completion.

Hamburg are more interested

The biggest difference between the two potential destinations is that the Bundesliga side are actively pushing for the transfer.

Hull City are interested, but have not made an official bid, and that matters because Moffi needs a club that genuinely wants him.

The 27-year-old is looking for a permanent exit from Nice after Porto decided against making his loan move permanent. He made nine league appearances for the Portuguese giants last season, scoring once and providing one assist.

Hamburg, on the other hand, are now close to reaching an agreement.

Moffi’s situation at Nice has changed significantly from the player who scored 11 Ligue 1 goals during the 2023-24 campaign.

An ACL injury kept him out for much of the following season, limiting him to just a handful of appearances. He subsequently returned to action but struggled to establish himself and got into a fight with the club and its fans before joining Porto on loan.

His loan spell in Portugal offered an opportunity to reset, but Porto ultimately chose not to activate their purchase option.

That leaves Moffi needing another fresh start, and Hamburg could provide exactly that.

The German club are rebuilding for a second stint after their promotion from the 2. Bundesliga, and Moffi would arrive with experience of Ligue 1 and European football, as well as the demands of international football with Nigeria.

Rather than joining a club where he would be another squad player, he would most likely be a starter for the three-time German Champions.

The Bundesliga offers a bigger stage

A move to Hull would mean playing in a club set to fight for safety in the English top-flight. Hamburg, by contrast, are preparing for an even better season in the Bundesliga after ensuring safety last term.

That difference matters for a Nigerian international whose long-term objective should be to return to a level where he can feature in European tournaments.

Moffi already has experience in one of Europe’s top five leagues through his time at Nice. A move to Germany would allow him to remain in a major European league while taking on a new challenge.

After a difficult period at Nice and a loan spell at Porto, what the Nigerian needs most is clarity, regular football and a club prepared to trust him.

Hamburg appear better placed to offer all three, and if the German club can complete the deal, Moffi could get the fresh start he needs.
