Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has achieved a monumental milestone by receiving the prestigious ANFA Special Award in Cairo, Egypt.
His outstanding contributions at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 earned him this distinguished recognition, boosting his status among Africa's finest.
During the tournament, Troost-Ekong led the Nigerian team to a strong second-place finish, mounting his position as a crucial pillar in the defence.
The Al Kholood star scored three goals and helped the Super Eagles achieve four clean sheets, which ultimately led to his being named the Player of the Tournament.
Troost-Ekong’s ANFA award sparks new ambitions
Following his ANFA award recognition, Troost-Ekong took to social media to express gratitude, specifically acknowledging Egyptian star Omar Tarek for receiving the award on his behalf.
“Unfortunately I couldn't make it; I am in transit, and I will be travelling to join the national team later today, so I couldn't make it to the ceremony.
“I want to say a big thank you to everyone at ANFA Awards, first of all to be nominated, and now, from what I understand, to have won the prize, so it is a big honour for me.
“I have got my dear friend Omar, who is there to receive the prize on my behalf. I wish you a wonderful evening, and hopefully in the coming years, I will be able to attend there in person. Thank you so much, everyone at ANFA Awards.”
The 31-year-old defender’s journey may still hold more honor. Nominated for the prestigious CAF African Footballer of the Year, Troost-Ekong now stands alongside notable talents, including his compatriot Ademola Lookman of Atalanta, in the competition for one of Africa’s top football awards.
With this award in the bag, William Troost-Ekong will be heading to international break with his head high, riding in huge confidence.
The super captain will be leading his side to trade tackles with Benin Republic and Rwanda in African Cup of Nations qualifiers next week.
