Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye enters the new Serie A season with something to prove, but also with a platform he has spent the last year building at Udinese, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Nigeria international has established himself as one of the club’s most important players after an impressive campaign between the posts, keeping 10 clean sheets in 30 Serie A appearances and attracting interest from several clubs across Europe’s top leagues.

Now, with another season ahead in Italy, Okoye has made it clear that his ambitions extend beyond simply maintaining his place in the Udinese starting XI.

The 26-year-old wants to keep improving as a goalkeeper while helping Udinese push towards a higher level in Serie A, with the club harbouring ambitions of challenging for European football.

Okoye was careful not to make extravagant predictions when discussing Udinese’s ambitions for the new Serie A campaign.

Instead, the Nigerian goalkeeper insisted that the club must focus on the basics before assessing where they stand later in the season.

“Everything is possible,” Okoye told The Guardian.

“But I think we should talk about that again in February or March. First we have to get the basics right and take it game by game.”

That measured approach could be important for Udinese. The club finished in the top half of Serie A last season and has a squad that Okoye believes is capable of competing for something more ambitious.

“We certainly have the quality, the players, an excellent staff, and a solid club behind us,” he added.

“Udinese is a club where a player can really grow and make that leap in quality.”

For Okoye, that means playing a significant role in turning Udinese’s stability into European aspirations.

His performances could be particularly important in tight Serie A matches where defensive organisation and goalkeeping can make the difference between a draw, defeat and three points.

Keeping another strong clean-sheet tally would be one of the clearest ways Okoye can help Udinese remain in contention for European places.

The goalkeeper has already shown that he can provide that foundation. The next step is doing it consistently enough to help his club turn a promising season into a memorable one.

2. Take his goalkeeping to another level

Perhaps the more important objective for Okoye is personal. Despite his growing reputation, the Super Eagles goalkeeper does not believe he has reached his ceiling.

“I believe there is always room for improvement in every direction,” he said.

“I’m very happy working here with a great goalkeeping staff. I’m on a good path, learning every day, and I can’t wait to show it on the pitch during the season.”

His comments about Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón also offer an insight into the qualities Okoye wants to develop.

When asked which goalkeeper impressed him most at the recent World Cup, Okoye did not simply point to spectacular saves.

Instead, he highlighted Simón’s ability to remain involved in matches and deal effectively with situations that require concentration, positioning and decision-making.

“I found Spain’s Unai Simón very impressive, especially towards the final stages,” Okoye said.

“Not so much for making hundreds of saves, but for the way he remained inside the game, defending deep balls against France. For me, that was goalkeeping of the highest level.”

Okoye’s development is no longer about making more spectacular saves or producing viral moments. It is about becoming a more complete goalkeeper capable of influencing games through his passing, decision-making and command of his penalty area.

“As I said, it’s not just about spectacular saves; it’s about managing those details,” he added.

He has already demonstrated that he can produce the saves required at Serie A level. The challenge now is to become more consistent in every other aspect of goalkeeping and establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Italy’s top-flight.

A big season for Okoye

The goalkeeper’s performances for Udinese will have an impact beyond club football, particularly with Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign approaching.

With competition for the Super Eagles’ No. 1 shirt remaining intense, another strong season in Italy would strengthen Okoye’s case to usurp Stanley Nwabali in Eric Chelle’s starting eleven.

However, before thinking too far ahead, Okoye’s pathway is clear. He wants to help Udinese push as high as possible in Serie A while continuing his own development between the sticks.
