Two Philip Otele attributes that Union Berlin can benefit from

Super Eagles winger Philip Otele has emerged as a target for 1. FC Union Berlin, who are monitoring the Nigerian as potential cover in case Ilyas Ansah leaves the Alte Försterei before the transfer window shuts, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 27-year-old is available for around €4 million from FC Basel, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Hamburger SV, and is being tracked by a long list of clubs that includes Ipswich Town, Marseille, Lecce, Genoa and Al-Fateh alongside Union.

Under new head coach Mauro Lustrinelli, Union are attempting to shift away from the compact, counter-attacking football of the Urs Fischer and Steffen Baumgart eras and towards what the Swiss himself calls “intensity, dynamism and energy going forward.”

Their summer recruitment has been thin, and the squad Lustrinelli inherited from an 11th-place 2025/26 finish clearly needs attacking help.

1. A direct, one-versus-one wing threat

The first attribute is the one Union have been visibly missing. Lustrinelli wants a more offensive team, but the current squad has neither a proven Bundesliga wide goal-scorer nor a natural dribbler on either flank, which is why the club’s summer transfer window has been described as too quiet for the tactical reset the new head coach is trying to deliver.

Otele is exactly that missing profile. He scored nine goals in 18 Swiss Super League appearances during his first loan spell at Basel in 2024/25, helping the club win the Swiss Super League and Swiss Cup double, and before that he was the Liga I joint top scorer with 18 goals in 40 appearances for CFR Cluj in 2023/24, earning a place in the division’s Team of the Season.

His Hamburger SV sporting director publicly described him as a natural winger who brings flair, goal threat and the willingness to take defenders on, which is close to a job description for what Lustrinelli says he wants from his wingers this season.

Union have already seen the profile up close, losing 3-2 at home to Hamburger SV in February 2026 in a game in which Otele played 72 minutes and constantly caused problems to their backline.

2. Versatility that solves the Ansah problem

The second attribute is why Otele is on Union’s list in the first place. Union placed him on their radar in case Ilyas Ansah, the versatile right winger, leaves before the window closes.

Otele is one of very few available options who can fill Ansah’s shirt without forcing Lustrinelli into a system rethink.

He is right-footed but plays predominantly as a left winger, is comfortable on the right, and has been used as a centre-forward earlier in his career, most notably at CFR Cluj and Al Wahda.

At Hamburger SV, he was even asked to operate as a makeshift left-back during his loan spell, an assignment that limited his final-third numbers to zero goals and one assist in three Bundesliga starts but demonstrated a level of tactical flexibility strikers rarely offer.

One signing for €4 million who can play three attacking roles, and one defensive one at a pinch, is exactly the kind of low-risk, multi-use acquisition a squad in transition can build around.

Union Berlin have to move quickly

The complication is that Union are not alone. Lecce are in direct talks with Basel over the same player, and Ipswich Town and Marseille remain in the mix at the same €4 million to €5 million bracket, so any hesitation from the Berliners will cost them the player.

Union have a genuine track record of turning Nigerian attackers into Bundesliga-quality assets, with Taiwo Awoniyi’s Berlin spell the most obvious precedent, and Otele’s profile fits both the tactical reset Lustrinelli wants and the Ansah-shaped hole they are already trying to plug.
