Umar Sadiq: 3 things Nigerian striker must prove under new Valencia coach

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq is nearing a return from injury, with the Nigerian striker hoping to make a strong impression under new Valencia coach Javier Aguirre.

The 29-year-old has been sidelined since suffering a right hamstring injury during Valencia’s 3-1 defeat to Deportivo La Coruña in August. The setback interrupted his start to the season after he scored against Deportivo.

However, Sadiq offered an encouraging update on Wednesday, revealing that he would undergo further medical tests to determine when he could resume playing.

“I’m almost back. There are just a few steps left before I rejoin the team,” the former Rangers striker saiw in quotes revealed by Dario AS.

3 things Umar Sadiq must prove to Valencia’s new coach

1. Stay fit and regain consistency

Sadiq’s priority is to complete his recovery and return to full training without suffering another setback.

The former Almería striker has endured injury interruptions in recent seasons, making his physical availability an important part of his challenge at Valencia.

His latest injury came after he played the full 90 minutes against Deportivo and scored his first league goal of the campaign. Getting back to that level of involvement will be crucial if he wants to establish himself under Aguirre.

Sadiq revealed that the new coach had encouraged him to focus on recovering properly.

“I’ve spoken to him. He told me to recover well and that he’s waiting for me because he knows what I can bring to the team,” the striker said.

That support offers encouragement, but Sadiq must first prove he can stay fit enough to contribute regularly.

2. Become Aguirre’s main man

Sadiq has made it clear that he believes he can thrive under the Mexican coach.

Asked whether he could reproduce the goals Vedat Muriqi scored under Aguirre at Mallorca, the Nigerian responded confidently.

“Of course, why not?”

Muriqi was an important attacking figure during Aguirre’s time at Mallorca, and Sadiq believes their playing profiles have similarities.

“I think he’s more like me than I am like him,” the Valencia forward added.

The comparison creates an intriguing opportunity for Sadiq. His physical presence and ability to occupy defenders could make him a useful focal point, but he will need to translate that confidence into goals, hold-up play and consistent performances.

Aguirre’s willingness to wait for him suggests the striker has an opportunity to demonstrate his value once he returns.

3. Sadiq must help Valencia turn their season around

Sadiq’s ambitions extend beyond his personal performances. He wants to help Valencia return to the level he believes the club deserves.

“Our main objective is to take Valencia where they deserve to be. It’s not just my objective, but that of all the players,” he said.

Aguirre has inherited a team that needs consistency, and Sadiq’s return could provide another option in attack. However, the striker will have to compete for opportunities and quickly adapt to the coach’s demands.

He has promised supporters they will see his best version when he returns. Whether he can deliver on that promise will depend on his fitness, his finishing and how effectively he fits into Aguirre’s plans. For now, the first step is completing his recovery.
