Umar Sadiq: What Corberán’s departure means for Super Eagles striker

Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq’s Valencia chapter has entered a fresh phase of uncertainty after Los Che sacked head coach Carlos Corberán earlier today following a winless start to the 2026/27 La Liga season, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 43-year-old Spanish tactician was the man who signed off on Sadiq’s Valencia arrival on loan from Real Sociedad in January 2025, and had watched the 29-year-old Nigerian rebuild his career at Mestalla across the second half of 2024/25 before continuing into the 2026/27 campaign.

His departure now leaves the Nigerian without the head coach whose trust oversaw his renaissance at Valencia.

Óscar Sánchez, the head coach of Valencia’s reserve side, has been appointed interim boss while the club searches for Corberán’s permanent replacement.

What Corberán’s departure means for Umar Sadiq

The exit of the manager who believed in him

The first thing to understand about the Corberán departure is that it removes the specific head coach who publicly trusted Sadiq’s abilities.

When the Nigerian arrived at Mestalla on loan from Real Sociedad in January 2025, with his individual career considered close to career-plateau territory, it was Corberán who identified him as a squad option worth integrating and gave him the confidence that brought back his goalscoring touch.

That level of managerial backing will not automatically be inherited by the next coach.

Óscar Sánchez arrives with limited first-team head coach experience at La Liga level, and the permanent successor the club eventually appoints will bring their own tactical preferences and possibly preferred striker profiles into the Mestalla dressing room.

Sadiq’s fight for a spot in the team now has to be rebuilt from scratch.

A difficult time for Valencia

The timing of the Corberán exit is the second reason Sadiq should be genuinely worried.

Valencia are 20th and last in La Liga after five matches, having lost 5-0 to Barcelona at Mestalla and 1-0 at Sevilla, and the instability now means the striker rotation is likely to be re-evaluated, and the chance for Sadiq to make a claim is non-existent, because he’s currently dealing with a hamstring problem.

Hugo Duro is the incumbent Valencia number nine, having finished as the club’s top scorer with 10 La Liga goals in 2025/26.

Whoever replaces Corberán will need to decide whether Duro is the target-man solution to Valencia’s current scoring problems or whether Sadiq’s more mobile profile offers a fresh option worth investing minutes in.

That decision will be made under intense club-level pressure, in a squad already low on confidence.

Umar Sadiq is the only player to have scored for Valencia in a season that has brought nothing but pain to the fans of the club, and when he returns from his hamstring injury, that might be worth something.

For now, in Corberan’s absence, the six-time La Liga winners have to seal a win against Deportivo Alaves on Tuesday.
