Unity Cup 2026: Werder Bremen boss shares update on Super Eagles star as Chelle prepares list

Published on by

Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has provided a key fitness update on Super Eagles defender Felix Agu ahead of Saturday’s clash against Hoffenheim, Afrik-Foot reports.

Agu has endured a frustrating campaign riddled with injuries, spending more time on the sidelines than on the pitch.

This season alone, the defender has battled ankle and adductor issues, and most recently, a muscle problem that forced him to miss Werder Bremen’s last three outings.

His absence has been a significant blow for the club, who currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga. Werder need just one more point from their final two games to officially secure their top-flight survival.

This weekend, Bremen travel to the PreZero Arena to face Hoffenheim in what promises to be an enthralling encounter. While 6th-placed Die Kraichgauer are desperately hunting for a Champions League spot, Werder Bremen will look to be party poopers to secure their own safety.

Speaking ahead of the game, Thioune revealed that the Super Eagle has returned to training, though his match readiness remains a subject of caution.

”Felix is taking part in training today on a partial basis. I’m optimistic that by the end of the week, we’ll have another player available to us again,” Thioune said, per Deichstube.

Given the 26-year-old’s recent medical history, the coaching staff may be hesitant to rush him back and risk a long-term setback.

Can Felix Agu Secure a Spot in the Super Eagles Squad for June?

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will not be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but they have a busy schedule of fixtures lined up for June.

The team is set to face Poland and Portugal in high-profile friendlies before participating in the Unity Cup.

Head coach Eric Chelle previously indicated that he would select his strongest, most-trusted players for the clashes against Poland and Portugal, while utilizing fringe players for the Unity Cup.

Due to his recurring injuries, Agu has earned only one cap for Nigeria, which came during the 2025 Unity Cup. Consequently, he may have to settle for a spot in the Unity Cup roster once again.

However, his lack of consistent minutes at the club level complicates his case. Chelle will likely think twice before naming a player who has struggled for fitness in such a pivotal window.

The Franco-Malian tactician has been active recently, scouted at several Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) venues in search of fresh talent to bolster the national team.

With the squad list expected in a few weeks, Agu will be racing against time to prove his fitness and make the final cut.
