Zimbabwe interim head coach Kaitano Tembo has fired an early warning ahead of his side’s Unity Cup semi-final showdown against the Super Eagles of Nigeria next month, Afrik Foot reports.

The Warriors will face the three-time African champions on May 26 at The Valley in London, home of English Championship side Charlton Athletic.

The winner will progress to the final to play against the winner of the other semi-final between Jamaica and India.

Zimbabwe coach up for fight against Super Eagles

The 55-year-old was appointed as Zimbabwe’s coach by the Football Association yesterday, although on an interim basis.

In his opening presser, Tembo acknowledged Nigeria’s pedigree, but insists Zimbabwe are not travelling merely to make up the numbers.

“We are approaching it with seriousness and ambition. Playing against strong opposition like Nigeria, as well as Jamaica and India, provides a good test for the team,” the former Supersport United coach said in quotes revealed by COSAFA.

“These are the kind of high-quality matches that help players grow and give us a clear picture of where we are.

“Nigeria is a top side with quality players, so we respect them. But at the same time, we believe in our squad.

“Preparation will be key, organisation, discipline and making sure the players understand their roles.

“It’s an opportunity for us to compete and showcase our strength,” Tembo said about Eric Chelle’s side.

The 34-cap retired Zimbabwean defender remains confident in the talent pool his team possess.

“We have a good mix of talent. There is quality in the local league, strong players based in South Africa, and others playing in the UK and beyond.

“Our task is to bring them together, build unity and create a team that plays with purpose and pride,” Kaitano Tembo concluded.
