Victor Boniface: 3 Bundesliga records held by Super Eagles striker

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has spent his Bundesliga career oscillating between explosive brilliance and injury-forced absence, but his records in Germany remain untouched, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 25-year-old joined Bayer Leverkusen from Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in July 2023 for €22.6m and delivered a brilliant breakout campaign.

His 14 goals and eight assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances helped Leverkusen win their first-ever Bundesliga title and complete an unbeaten league campaign under Xabi Alonso, only the second Bundesliga side to go through a full 34-match league season without defeat.

Even amid the frustrating injury-marred seasons that have followed, the Akure-born forward’s individual Bundesliga achievements have kept his name in German football’s record books.

1. First player in Bundesliga history to win Rookie of the Month four times in a single season

The Nigerian won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award in each of August, September, October and November 2023, becoming the first player in the history of the award to lift it four times in a single Bundesliga season.

The context around the streak makes the record even more emphatic. Boniface’s opening five Bundesliga matches for Leverkusen produced six goals, an output that also equalled the club’s record for most goals in the opening five games of a Bundesliga season by any Leverkusen player. The record has stood untouched since.

2. First Nigerian to win the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award

The second record follows from the first. Boniface was voted Bundesliga Rookie of the Season 2023/24 by the DFL in cooperation with Bundesliga partner Sorare, becoming the first Nigerian to win the award.

The Rookie of the Season is decided from the pool of Rookie of the Month winners across the entire Bundesliga campaign, and Boniface’s four-month domination of the monthly award effectively determined the outcome before the season was even complete.

He beat off competition from RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons (who won the Rookie of the Month for December and April), Borussia Dortmund’s Ian Maatsen (January) and TSG Hoffenheim’s Maximilian Beier (February and March).

3. Most Bundesliga goal involvements by a Nigerian in a single season

The third record captures the output that crowned Boniface’s 2023/24 season and stretched the ceiling of what a Nigerian forward has produced across a single Bundesliga campaign.

Boniface’s 14 goals and eight assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen in 2023/24 combine for 22 total Bundesliga goal involvements.

That total is the highest single-season figure by any Nigerian player in Bundesliga history, comfortably ahead of the previous Nigerian best set by Taiwo Awoniyi’s 15 goals and one assist in the 2021/22 season.

Boniface’s Bundesliga records outlast the injuries that followed

The three records above will remain in the German top flight’s books regardless of what happens next in Boniface’s career.

His 2024/25 season was disrupted by a hamstring injury sustained in mid-November 2024 and an ill-fated car accident in Frankfurt in October 2024 that shortened his availability.

His 2025/26 spell on loan at Werder Bremen produced zero Bundesliga goals in 11 appearances before a knee operation in January 2026 ended his campaign, and his 2026/27 return to Leverkusen has already produced the Europa League squad omission explained by new head coach Carles Martinez.
