Victor Boniface: Why Liverpool’s wild Wirtz splurge adds fuel to transfer fire

Published on by

Should Victor Boniface remain at Bayer Leverkusen come the start of the 2025/26 season, he will have to labour without his two most prolific providers.

The duo of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, who this summer have completed moves to Premier League side Liverpool, were instrumental to the Nigeria international’s successful first two seasons in Germany.

Without them, and with new manager Erik ten Hag reportedly favouring Patrik Schick upfront, the writing is very much on the wall for Boniface.

Over the course of 24 months in Leverkusen, 28 percent of Boniface’s goals were assisted by either Wirtz or Frimpong.

The Germany international, who has now claimed the British transfer record, was the club’s creative lynchpin, and laid on five goals for the 24-year-old striker, while Frimpong recorded four assists for the former Union St Gilloise marksman.

Those two aside, only Alejandro Grimaldo, who has been linked with a transfer to Barcelona, assisted Boniface more than twice.

If, against all expectation, he remains at the club, it will be imperative that he finds new connections in order to return to his prolific best following a mixed 2024/25 campaign.
