Victor Boniface: How Newcastle goal could shape striker’s Leverkusen future

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has given Bayer Leverkusen another reason to believe his return to top form is possible after he scored a stunning late winner against Newcastle United, Afrik-Foot reports.

Boniface was introduced in the 80th minute of Leverkusen’s 2-1 victory at St James’ Park and needed only a few minutes to make his presence felt, receiving the ball on the edge of the box before creating space with a clever dummy and calmly finishing into the bottom corner.

The quality of the goal immediately reminded observers of the player who terrorised Bundesliga defences during Leverkusen’s historic 2023/24 campaign.

The display comes at a time when Boniface is fighting to re-establish himself at the BayArena after a difficult period marked by injuries, fitness problems and an unsuccessful loan spell at Werder Bremen.

Leverkusen Director lauds Victor Boniface

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes was quick to highlight what Boniface’s goal represented beyond the scoreline.

“He scored a fantastic goal. We’re very happy for Boni that he managed to score in front of such a crowd,” the 44-year-old told BILD.

The Leverkusen chief also praised the Nigerian’s ability to create shooting opportunities despite pressure from defenders, suggesting that the qualities which made him so dangerous before his injury problems are beginning to return.

“The fact that he’s capable of those kinds of moves again is a positive development,” Rolfes added.

That assessment is significant for Boniface’s future. The 25-year-old is attempting to convince Leverkusen that he can become an integral part of Die Werkself‘s plans.

Boniface’s fitness battle

There has never been much doubt about Boniface’s ability. His first season in Germany proved that.

After joining Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023, he scored 21 goals and provided nine assists as Xabi Alonso’s side won their first Bundesliga title without losing a league game, but injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress since then.

His second season was disrupted by fitness problems, while a proposed move to Al-Nassr and interest from AC Milan failed to materialise amid concerns over his knee.

His loan spell at Werder Bremen then produced little, with Boniface failing to score in 11 appearances before undergoing surgery.

That history explains why his Newcastle goal matters. Leverkusen are simply waiting to see whether he can remain fit and physically ready for a long gruelling season.

Leverkusen coach Carles Martínez has already acknowledged the difficult road ahead for the Nigerian.

“Talent is talent,” the Spaniard said, while also stressing that Boniface must continue progressing physically and take his comeback step by step.

That is where the Newcastle performance must be viewed carefully. Scoring a brilliant goal in a pre-season game does not automatically guarantee Boniface a starting place, but it gives him something he badly needs – momentum.

For a striker who has struggled to maintain rhythm because of injuries, every appearance without a setback matters, especially if it comes with a goal to boost his confidence.

Boniface’s situation at Leverkusen remains complicated. The club still have utmost respect for what he contributed during their title-winning campaign, but their attack has evolved during his absence.

Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong have joined Liverpool while Xabi Alonso has handled coaching at Real Madrid, and now at Chelsea. In Bayer’s new-look squad, Boniface must earn his place again.

The Newcastle goal was an important first step because it showed that Boniface can still produce the kind of individual quality that made him so valuable.

If he can follow it with a sustained run of fitness and further goals, the conversation around his future could change quickly.

The next few months will be crucial, but that goal at St James’ Park has reminded Leverkusen of what they could have in their squad if the Nigerian can finally put his injury problems behind him.
