Victor Osimhen’s Galatasaray suffered a damaging 4-1 defeat to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, leaving Okan Buruk with several problems to solve.
The Cimbom made a promising start at RAMS Park, taking the lead through Aleksey Batrakov in the 28th minute. They even had a second goal ruled out for offside before João Cancelo equalised for Barcelona shortly before half-time.
However, the game changed after the restart. Fermín López and Anthony Gordon scored within three minutes of each other, before Karim Adeyemi added a fourth to complete Barcelona’s comeback.
For Victor Osimhen, who played the full 90 minutes, the defeat was a frustrating return to European action after his recent injury absence, but the bigger concern for Galatasaray is how quickly and easily they let the game slip away from them.

Buruk admitted after the match that his team sat too deep before half-time, while Barcelona’s early second-half goals left Galatasaray with very little opportunity to recover as the visitors held the ball.
With a Champions League trip to Lille coming up next Wednesday, the Turkish champions have three important questions to answer.
Victor Osimhen: 3 Galatasaray questions after Barcelona loss
1. Can Galatasaray maintain their discipline for 90 minutes?
Galatasaray’s opening goal showed that their plan could trouble Barcelona. They pressed aggressively in spells, looked to move the ball forward quickly and used Osimhen as a focal point for their direct attacks. The problem was sustaining that approach.

As the first half progressed, Galatasaray dropped deeper, allowing Barcelona to move closer to their penalty area. Cancelo’s equaliser exposed the danger of that decision, as Buruk acknowledged the problem after the match.
“Towards the end of the first half, we retreated too much into our own penalty area. That was one of the things I did not want against Barcelona,” the Galatasaray coach explained in quotes revealed by EFE.
His admission points to an issue that extends beyond the defeat. Galatasaray must decide when to press high, when to defend in a compact block and how to prevent opponents from repeatedly attacking the space around their box.
Against Barcelona, the retreat gave the visitors the initiative. Against Lille, Galatasaray will need a more consistent structure if they are to avoid a third straight UCL loss.
2. How can Buruk prevent one setback from becoming a collapse?
At 1-1, the Turkish side still had a chance to regroup and make life difficult for Flick’s men in the second half.
Instead, Barcelona scored twice in quick succession, leaving the hosts chasing the game.

Buruk revealed that he had instructed his players to press higher after the interval, but the score changed before the plan could take effect.
“At half-time, I told the team that we needed to press higher, but the score quickly became 3-1 and the match changed in an instant,” the 52-year-old said.
The difficulty was not simply conceding three goals. It was the speed with which Galatasaray lost control of the contest after conceding the equaliser.
Barcelona’s movement and quality deserve credit, particularly the influence of Lamine Yamal, who provided two assists and was deservedly handed the Man of the Match award. Nevertheless, Galatasaray must find a way to respond when their original game plan stops working.
That means making tactical adjustments quickly, maintaining concentration after conceding and avoiding the loss of organisation that can allow a difficult situation to become an overwhelming one.

3. Can Galatasaray create enough threat beyond Osimhen?
Victor Osimhen is Galatasaray’s most important attacking player, but the Barcelona defeat raised questions about the support around the Nigerian striker.
The Super Eagles forward just recently returned from an adductor injury and had only made a brief substitute appearance against Kasımpaşa before starting against Barcelona.
His physical presence and ability to run behind defenders remain important weapons, particularly when Galatasaray look to attack quickly. However, the team also needs alternative routes to goal when opponents restrict the space available to him.
Barcelona’s defensive organisation disrupted Galatasaray’s attacking rhythm, while the hosts struggled to regain their composure once they fell behind.
Buruk acknowledged that Barcelona’s quality made it difficult for his team to press effectively.
The Nigerian’s return from injury should help the team, but he cannot be expected to solve every attacking problem alone.

Lille test offers Galatasaray a chance to respond
Galatasaray’s next Champions League fixture is away to Lille on the 21st of October, giving Buruk a relatively short period to address the issues exposed by Barcelona.
The defeat does not erase the attacking promise Galatasaray showed in the opening stages, but it demonstrates how quickly their approach can unravel when they surrender control of the match.
For Osimhen, the priority will be to regain full rhythm and help the team produce a more consistent performance. For Buruk, the challenge is to improve his side’s defensive structure, strengthen the players’ response to setbacks and find more reliable ways to create chances.
