Victor Osimhen’s leadership credentials are back in the spotlight, with Galatasaray considering handing the Super Eagles striker the captain’s armband ahead of next season, Afrik Foot reports.
The Turkish champions are reportedly ready to make the Nigerian forward the face of their long-term project, with manager Okan Buruk said to be fully behind the decision.
It is another sign of how highly Osimhen is rated in Istanbul, especially after scoring 22 goals and eight assists in 33 appearances last season while helping Galatasaray retain the Super Lig title.
While Galatasaray appear ready to elevate him into a leadership role, questions remain over whether the 27-year-old is ready to wear the armband permanently for the Nigeria national football team.

That debate intensified after former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju openly questioned whether Osimhen possesses the emotional discipline needed to captain the national team.
Why Victor Osimhen looks like a natural captain
On pure footballing merit, there are very few stronger cases in Nigerian football.
Since making his senior debut in 2017, Osimhen has scored 35 goals in 46 appearances for Nigeria, placing him just two goals behind the late Rashidi Yekini as the country’s all-time top scorer.
That record alone gives him enormous authority in the dressing room, but beyond the numbers, Osimhen’s style naturally reflects leadership. He presses relentlessly, fights for every ball, demands intensity from teammates, and often plays through pain.

For younger players coming into the squad, Osimhen sets the standard for commitment.
His rise from the streets of Lagos to becoming one of Europe’s elite strikers also makes him an inspirational figure. Leadership is often about relatability, and the story of the former Napoli striker carries weight.
It is no surprise that when captain Wilfred Ndidi was unavailable, Osimhen already wore the armband in AFCON matches.

The concern: emotional control
This is where Adepoju’s criticism becomes relevant. The former Real Madrid B midfielder mentions the striker needs more refinement before becoming captain.
“Leadership requires more than talent. A captain must possess playing quality, leadership ability, emotional control, and the capacity to represent and unite the team both on and off the pitch,” the 55-year-old said in an interview with PM News.
Osimhen’s fiery nature is one of his greatest strengths, but it can also become a weakness.

Adepoju referenced the reported clash with Ademola Lookman during AFCON 2025, insisting the striker should have shown more restraint.
“He should have controlled his emotions,” Adepoju said.
That incident reinforced a perception that Osimhen can sometimes allow competitive frustration to boil over.
For a captain, that matters. A national team captain must not only inspire but also stabilise difficult moments, especially in tournaments where pressure is highest.
What Galatasaray’s decision could mean for Nigeria
If Galatasaray hands Osimhen the armband permanently, it could significantly strengthen his case for Nigeria.
Captaining a club of that size, in a demanding environment, would sharpen his leadership instincts.

It would also expose him to daily responsibility beyond goals, managing dressing-room dynamics, media pressure and tactical accountability.
That kind of growth could directly benefit the Super Eagles. Right now, Ndidi remains the safe choice because of his calmness, seniority and measured personality, but Osimhen is clearly the long-term heir if he matures emotionally.
Very few people are born captains. Most grow into it, and at Galatasaray, Osimhen may be getting the perfect opportunity to prove he can do the same with the Super Eagles.
