Victor Osimhen: One key advantage Galatasaray can unlock against Barcelona

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen returned from a groin problem last night, and that hands Galatasaray a timely boost against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.

However, that wouldn’t be their only weapon. The 27-year-old was last seen in action on the 4th of September before suffering an injury that saw him ruled out of the International break.

He returned last night and helped the CimBom Aslan seal a 3-1 win over Kasimpasa, providing an assist in his 13 minutes on the pitch.

The Turkish champions will also count on the intimidating atmosphere at RAMS Park, where even some of Europe’s biggest clubs have struggled to cope with the noise and intensity generated by the home supporters.

Tottenham Hotspur defender, Andrew Robertson, recalling the clash between Liverpool and Okan Buruk’s side last season, revealed he hated every minute of the game at RAMS Park.

“I hated playing against Galatasaray last season. Galatasaray away was horrible. They just whistled the whole game,” the 32-year-old said on the Overlap.

Galatasaray won that game, 1-0, with Victor Osimhen providing the assist for Mario Lemina.

Before the knockout clash, Liverpool and Galatasaray previously met during the group phase of last season’s UEFA Champions League campaign.

Osimhen scored the game’s only goal from 12 yards and revealed a conversation he had with Virgil van Dijk, saying the Dutch defender was stunned by the atmosphere created by the Galatasaray fans.

“If you don’t believe me, just ask van Dijk. I was speaking to him after our Champions League match against Liverpool, and he said, “Man, what kind of atmosphere is this!?”

“I said, “Brother, to be honest, if I never came here and someone just told me about it, I wouldn’t believe it,” the former Napoli man concluded.

Those reactions underline the challenge awaiting Barcelona. If Galatasaray can harness their supporters’ energy and combine it with Osimhen’s attacking qualities, they could make life uncomfortable for the visitors.

How Galatasaray can use Osimhen and their fans to trouble Barcelona

Osimhen’s return could hardly have come at a better time for Okan Buruk’s side. The striker came off the bench yesterday and helped set up Mario Lemina’s stoppage-time goal after recovering from a groin injury.

Although the Nigerian is still working his way back to full fitness, his presence gives Galatasaray a focal point in attack and a threat for defenders ahead of Barcelona’s visit.

Osimhen’s movement behind defensive lines, physical presence and willingness to press can force opposing defenders into errors, particularly against a Barcelona side that likes to build up from the back with their centre-backs.

Barcelona will want to control the ball, dictate the tempo and push Galatasaray back. However, if the hosts can disrupt that rhythm and release Osimhen quickly into space on the counter, the striker could punish the Catalan side, who are very vulnerable in transition.

That is where the home crowd becomes very important. Robertson’s description of being whistled throughout the match illustrates how relentless the atmosphere can become.

If Osimhen leads the press, wins aerial duels or forces Barcelona into mistakes, the crowd could respond by raising the intensity further.

That energy can help Galatasaray sustain their pressure and give the players an extra boost of adrenaline to get a victory over the line, considering they already lost their first UCL game to Sporting Lisbon.

However, it is important to note that Osimhen has only just returned from injury, and his appearance against Kasımpaşa does not mean he is ready to play 90 minutes at Champions League intensity.

Buruk will need to manage the striker’s workload carefully while deciding how best to use him against Barcelona. Even if Osimhen starts on the bench, his introduction could give Galatasaray a fresh attacking threat when the visitors begin to tire.
