Victor Osimhen vs Viktor Gyökeres: Which striker is better for Arsenal?

Published on by

In Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyökeres, Arsenal have a difficult striker question as they prepare for another Premier League title defence, Afrik-Foot reports.

Gyökeres has only just completed his first season at the club, yet reports have linked Arsenal with a move for Galatasaray and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen. This is even as La Liga champions Barcelona could lure Arsenal forward Viktor Gyökeres to Spain.

The debate is not simply about who scores more goals. Arsenal need a striker who can attack space, press defenders, win physical battles and deliver in the Champions League.

On those points, Manchester United-linked Osimhen and Gyökeres offer different solutions.

Goals: Osimhen has the stronger recent record

Gyökeres scored 21 goals in 55 appearances for Arsenal in 2025-26. He became the club’s top scorer and was the first Arsenal player since Alexis Sánchez in 2014-15 to score at least 20 goals in his first season. His league return was 14 goals. His Champions League record was five goals in 13 appearances.

Osimhen’s numbers were stronger in Turkey. He scored 22 goals and made seven assists in 33 appearances for Galatasaray in 2025-26. He scored 15 league goals and added another seven in 10 Champions League appearances.

The Nigerian also had a major impact in Europe. UEFA records 27 overall Champions League appearances and 16 goals for him at club level, compared with 21 appearances and 11 goals for Gyökeres.

Movement: Osimhen gives Arsenal more threat behind defenders

Osimhen’s main weapon is his ability to attack space at speed. The 27-year-old can start between centre-backs, move across the defensive line and then explode into the space behind them. His acceleration makes him difficult to control when Arsenal, who are trailing United in the race for Osimhen, play quick passes through midfield.

That could suit Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Arsenal’s other creative players. A pass into space would give Osimhen a chance to race onto the ball rather than always needing it at his feet.

Gyökeres offers a different type of movement. He can run behind defenders, but he also comes towards the ball and uses his body to protect possession. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal often played direct passes into him so he could hold the ball and bring other players into attacks.

Advantage: Osimhen for runs behind. Gyökeres for link play.

Pressing: both can lead the line

Osimhen is not simply a striker who waits for chances. A tactical analysis of his Napoli performances found that he could close defenders quickly, change direction during a press and continue the chase when the ball was passed back to the goalkeeper.

Gyökeres also gives Arsenal energy without the ball. His combination of speed, strength and tactical awareness allows him to pressure defenders and block passing options. His physical power can make that pressure uncomfortable because defenders have to deal with him in contact situations.

There is an important difference. Osimhen’s pressing is built around explosive acceleration. Gyökeres combines his pressure with his ability to win physical duels.

Advantage: Osimhen for explosive pressing, Gyökeres for physical pressure.

Physical strength: Gyökeres has a clear weapon

Gyökeres is built to play against Premier League centre-backs. At Arsenal, he has shown that he can receive a direct pass with a defender close behind him, protect the ball and wait for support. Against Tottenham last season, Opta recorded him winning five of 11 duels while acting as Arsenal’s main attacking outlet.

That quality matters when Arsenal face teams that defend deep. Instead of trying to pass through 10 players, Arsenal can play into Gyökeres and build the next attack from him.

Osimhen is also powerful. He has used his strength to hold off defenders and compete for aerial balls, while his speed gives him another way to escape pressure. The Galatasaray forward is physically strong enough to hold up play when his team is under pressure.

But Gyökeres has made physical domination a central part of his game.

Champions League: Osimhen has more experience

This is where the gap becomes clear. Osimhen is the highest-scoring Nigerian in the history of the Champions League with 16 goals. UEFA’s records also show he boasts 26 goals across all European club competitions. Clearly, the Super Eagles forward is built for the biggest occasions and with Arsenal aiming to go one better than last year’s Champions League runners-up finish, the Nigerian is the best fit.

A goal machine in his own right, Gyökeres also has a respectable 11 goals in 21 Champions League appearances. Before joining Arsenal, he scored six goals in eight Champions League games for Sporting CP.

Gyökeres did make an important contribution to Arsenal’s run to the 2026 Champions League final.

Osimhen, however, has faced Champions League opposition across several seasons and clubs. His seven goals for Galatasaray in the 2025-26 competition included the crucial goal against Juventus in the play-off round.

So who fits Arsenal better?

Gyökeres has already answered one important question. He can score goals in England.

Twenty-one goals in his first Arsenal season is a strong return, especially after a difficult start. His 14 Premier League goals also helped Arsenal win the league.

Osimhen, though, offers a different ceiling. His pace would give Arsenal a more direct threat behind high defensive lines. His Champions League record is stronger. His movement can stretch centre-backs, while his pressing can start attacks higher up the pitch.

Gyökeres is the better option when Arsenal need a striker who can fight centre-backs, receive direct passes and bring teammates into play. Osimhen is the more dangerous option when Arsenal need speed, depth and a striker who can turn one pass into a clear scoring chance.

The transfer question therefore depends on what Mikel Arteta wants next. If Arsenal want to improve the physical side of their attack, Gyökeres already provides it. If they want a more explosive forward who can attack space and add greater Champions League pedigree, Osimhen makes a strong case.

On the evidence of goals, movement and European experience, Osimhen has the stronger individual case. On fit with Arsenal’s current system and physical hold-up play, Gyökeres has a strong argument of his own.
