Victor Osimhen transfer: How ex-Liverpool man could shut Barcelona door on Nigeria star

Published on by

Any remaining hope that Victor Osimhen could secure a move to Barcelona appears to be fading, with fresh reports suggesting the Spanish giants have already moved in a different direction, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Nigerian striker has been linked with several top European clubs following his prolific campaign at Galatasaray, where he once again showed Europe what he is capable of. However, Barcelona are reportedly unwilling to pursue a deal despite Osimhen being presented to the club through intermediaries.

According to reports from Spain, Barcelona’s hierarchy appreciates Osimhen’s quality and goalscoring record, but the club’s recruitment team does not view him as a priority target. The Catalans remain focused on finding a long-term successor to veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, but their preferred option is Atletico Madrid star Julián Álvarez.

Should Barcelona fail to land Álvarez, reports indicate that former Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez has now emerged as the leading alternative, placing Osimhen even further down the list of potential signings.

The latest development comes from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, which claims Barcelona would switch their attention from Victor Osimhen to Núñez if a deal for Álvarez proves impossible.

The Uruguayan striker’s situation has changed significantly in recent months. After leaving Liverpool for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, Núñez struggled for regular opportunities and has reportedly not featured in an official match since February. The Saudi club is said to be considering changes to its foreign-player allocation, creating uncertainty around the 26-year-old’s future.

Barcelona’s interest is largely driven by financial considerations. The club continues to operate under strict budget restrictions and must be careful with transfer spending and wage commitments.

Meanwhile, Osimhen, who has also been linked with Real Madrid and English Premier League giants Manchester United, remains one of the most expensive strikers on the market. Any permanent deal would require a huge financial package that Barcelona are currently unable or unwilling to commit to.

Beyond the financial aspect, Barcelona’s recruitment department reportedly sees Núñez as a more flexible attacking option. While Osimhen is regarded as a classic centre-forward who thrives inside the penalty area and in physical battles with defenders, Núñez offers the ability to press aggressively, attack from wider positions and fit into a fluid front line.

For that reason, Barcelona’s pursuit of Núñez would effectively end any possibility of a move for Osimhen. In reality, though, reports suggest the door may already have been closed, with the Catalan club having no intention of advancing negotiations for the Super Eagles star regardless of how their search for Lewandowski’s successor unfolds.
