Victor Udoh: Ex-Southampton wonderkid found dead aged 21 – ‘Food poisoning?’

Published on by

Former Southampton youngster Victor Udoh has died at the age of 21 after reportedly being found dead in Abuja under what local reports described as suspicious circumstances, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Nigerian forward had returned home for the off-season following the end of the campaign with Czech side SK Dynamo České Budějovice when the tragic incident occurred.

According to reports from Nigeria and Belgium, Udoh had spent the evening with a group of friends before he was discovered lifeless the following morning in the Nigerian capital. Early local reports suggested suspected food or drink poisoning may have played a role, although no official medical confirmation has yet been released by authorities.

The news sent shockwaves through clubs connected to the young attacker’s career, with both Southampton and Royal Antwerp issuing emotional tributes on Tuesday.

Southampton said: “We are devastated by the tragic passing of former player Victor Udoh at the age of 21. The thoughts of everyone at #SaintsFC go out to Victor’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”

Antwerp also paid tribute to the winger, recalling his rapid rise in Belgium after arriving from Nigeria in 2023.

“With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh,” the Belgian club wrote.

“Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time. Rest in peace, Victor.”

La Liga side Sevilla have also sent their condolences with a statement: “We join the rest of the footballing world in mourning the death of Nigerian footballer Victor Udoh. May he rest in peace.”

Victor Udoh: From Abuja grassroots football to Europe

Udoh’s death has brought an abrupt and heartbreaking end to a career that had started to gather momentum across several European leagues.

Born and raised in Abuja, the attacker developed through local grassroots football with Hypebuzz FC and TBC FC before earning a move abroad at the age of 18.

His breakthrough came with Royal Antwerp F.C., who signed him in 2023 after scouting him in Nigeria. Udoh quickly made an impression in the Belgian club’s reserve side, scoring 12 goals in 21 matches for the Young Reds.

His pace, direct running and ability to operate across the frontline soon pushed him into the senior squad. He made his first-team debut against Royal Charleroi Sporting Club and went on to feature 28 times for Antwerp’s senior team, contributing two assists.

That progress earned him a move to Southampton F.C. in February 2025 on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Although he never made a senior appearance at St Mary’s, Udoh featured regularly for Southampton’s Under-21 side in Premier League 2. However, his stay in England lasted only seven months before both parties agreed to part ways in September 2025 so he could pursue regular first-team football elsewhere.

He then moved to the Czech Republic, signing a long-term contract with SK Dynamo České Budějovice until 2028.

Despite still being at the early stage of his professional career, Udoh had already experienced football in Nigeria, Belgium, England and the Czech Republic before his sudden death.

He never received a senior call-up to the Nigeria national football team, but many observers in Nigerian football viewed him as one of the country’s emerging attacking prospects because of his speed, technical quality and versatility in wide areas.

Instead of preparing for another European season, Nigerian football is now mourning a player whose journey appeared only just beginning.
