WAFCON 2025: Super Falcons show ‘Mission X’ mettle in massacre of Banda’s Zambia

Nigeria's Super Falcons produced a sparkling performance to demolish Zambia 5-0 in Casablanca on Friday.

The nine-time African champions took an early lead and never looked in danger of relinquishing it, earning a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The result extended the Super Falcons' enviable record of never failing to reach the competition's final four.

No Asisat Oshoala, no problem for Super Falcons

Nigeria coach Justin Madugu made a handful of changes to what could be considered his strongest lineup, with the biggest surprise being the exclusion of six-time CAF Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala.

His bravery was justified almost right away. The Super Falcons took the lead inside the first two minutes, with defender Osinachi Ohale heading home from Esther Okoronkwo's flighted set-piece.

Zambia fought back, with Barbra Banda's powerful running causing some problems, but Nigeria held their nerve. They then did one better, doubling their lead through Okoronkwo, who chested down Rasheedat Ajibade's cross before firing into the bottom corner.

A ball over the top found Chinwendu Ihezuo running in behind, and she finished coolly to make it three just before half-time.

Proceedings were calmer to start the second half, but then Tosin Demehin headed home another free-kick from Okoronkwo. That took the fight out of the Zambians, and Folashade Ijamilusi, in her first start of the tournament, tapped in Ajibade's low cross to the back post to put gloss on the scoreline.
