WAFCON 2025: Super Falcons set up Zambia date with pathetic Algeria showing

Nigeria’s Super Falcons dominated proceedings in Sunday’s meeting with Algeria, but were forced to settle for a goalless draw that sealed top spot in Group B at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The nine-time African champions had already secured a place in the last eight with victory over Botswana in their previous match, but faced a battle for headship of the group with Algeria, who came into the encounter on four points from their opening two matches.

As such, Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu made eight changes to the team that started their opening two group matches, with the likes of Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne and Michelle Alozie rested.

Toothless Super Falcons struggle without regulars

While Nigeria dominated possession and territory, there was little by way of clear cut chances, and they in turn were rarely troubled by an Algeria side with limited ambitions.

Francisca Ordega saw a decent chance saved by the foot of the Algerian goalkeeper, and midfielder Jennifer Echegini saw an effort fly wide after a mazy dribble at the heart of the opposition defence.

Despite not finding the breakthrough, the point was enough to secure top spot, and the Super Falcons’ reward is a meeting with Zambia in Casablanca on July 17, 2025.
