Werder Bremen coach issues injury update on Super Eagles star

Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has opened up on the fitness of Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface, Afrik Foot reports.

The 25-year-old defied odds by returning to training after undergoing a cartilage operation last year to rectify a nibbling knee issue.

Boniface was tipped to use the remainder of the season to complete his rehabilitation while returning to full action next season.

However, it appears the 2024 Bundesliga Rookie of the season has recovered earlier than expected, and is in to feature again for Werder Bremen before the end of the 2025/2026 domestic campaign.

Werder Bremen coach issues Victor Boniface update

Die Grün-Weißen have done well to wriggle their way out of the Bundesliga relegation zone, but Coach Thioune has mentioned that Boniface won’t be an immediate option ahead of their clash against RB Leipzig tomorrow afternoon.

“First of all, I’m excited to meet him. We’ve had a long conversation. He has signalled to us that he wants to help us in the fight against relegation,” the former Hamburger SV coach said in quotes revealed by Werder Bremen’s official website.

“For me, that offers another option, but not yet for this weekend. In the next few weeks we will play against teams on equal terms and if we can let Victor play for a few minutes, then that can help us a lot and be a win for us,” the German tactician concluded.

Werder Bremen’s head of sports, Peter Niemeyer, was also left stunned by Victor Boniface’s quick recovery.

“We knew what condition he was in. He has to work on his fitness condition now, and we’re helping him with that. Victor in particular in his training,” the 42-year-old told BILD in quotes revealed by Transfermarkt.

“He has managed the operation better than previously predicted. His knee is stable, the rehab went well. Of course, he is currently not physically fit and is not able to play Bundesliga.

“He wants to help the team again. We are now working intensively with him to achieve this goal,” Niemeyer concluded.

Boniface has seen his market value plummet from €20m back in November 2025 to €5m in April 2026. This happened because he hasn’t been in action since December.
