Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung has dismissed the notion that the club loses out on key targets because they are not willing to pay enough.
Chiefs have seen a number of targets slip through their fingers in recent years with the story being that they do not meet the asking price and end up with second and third choices, who do not meet the standards in the end, leading to their struggles on the pitch.
Motaung says the club has one of the biggest budgets in the PSL and the notion that they are not big spenders is false although she also wants the selling clubs to set realistic prices for players.
Jessica Motaung defends Chiefs’ spending

“Chiefs pay a lot of money, sir. So, I’m actually quite surprised so I think it is absolute nonsense,” she told the media at the launch of the Toyota Cup as quoted by Soccer Laduma.
“If I look at our budgets and I look and the investments we are making into players and the transfer space. I also think the South African market needs to evaluate itself,” she added, revealing the difficulties the club faces while negotiating transfer deals.
“Are the negotiations fair? Are the prices people are asking for players fair? We have to look at our industry but we have certainly made sure and you can see from our investments in the last season.

“Not only in the players but in the technical team. You can see that Chiefs are putting money where its mouth is. It is a matter of making sure we evaluate and make sure our spend gives us the return that we need,” she further said.
Chiefs spent big ahead of last season with seven players signed in the off-season before three were added in January but they still struggled in the PSL, finishing ninth, although they won the Nedbank Cup which will see them play CAF Confederation next term.
Ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, they are reported to have signed ex-Orlando Pirates full-backs Paseko Mako and Thabiso Monyane as well as English-based midfielder Ethan Chislett while they are reportedly eyeing SuperSport United’s Siphesihle Ndlovu.
