AFCON 2025: Bafana Bafana’s Group B rivals confirm new coach appointment

Published on by

As the countdown to 2025 Africa Cup of Nations intensifies, one of Bafana Bafana’s Group B opponents, Zimbabwe, has made a bold move to strengthen their campaign by appointing Marian (Mario) Marinica as the new head coach of the national team, the Warriors.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed Marinica’s appointment on a one-year deal, selecting the Romanian tactician ahead of several high-profile candidates, including Pitso Mosimane, Stuart Baxter, and Chris Hughton. The decision signals ZIFA’s intent to build a competitive and forward-thinking setup ahead of the continental showpiece.

A UEFA Pro Licensed coach, Marinica brings over 25 years of international experience across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. His résumé includes technical roles with elite clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as national team stints with Paraguay, Mauritius, Malawi, and Liberia.

His most notable achievement came at AFCON 2022, where he guided Malawi to a historic Round of 16 finish. More recently, he led Liberia to become the highest climber in the FIFA Rankings in June 2024, showcasing his ability to transform underdog teams into competitive units.

ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi expressed confidence in Marinica’s appointment:

“We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe. His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results at international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era.”

Marinica’s immediate focus will be on preparing the Warriors for upcoming friendlies against Algeria and Qatar, which will serve as key tune-ups for AFCON 2025. His mandate includes squad assessment, integrating diaspora talent, and building a cohesive unit capable of challenging in Group B — where Zimbabwe will face Bafana Bafana and other regional rivals.

For South Africa, the appointment adds a layer of intrigue to the group stage. Marinica’s tactical acumen and familiarity with Southern African football could pose a fresh challenge for Hugo Broos’ side, especially given his proven ability to get results with limited resources.
