Three high-profile coaches are reportedly in contention to take charge of Zimbabwe, one of Bafana Bafana’s group-stage opponents at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Among the nearly 300 coaches who applied for the vacant Zimbabwe national team job following the dismissal of Michael Nees are Stuart Baxter, Pitso Mosimane, and Chris Hughton. According to media reports the former Ghana Black Stars head coach Hughton has emerged as the frontrunner for the role.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) opened applications earlier this week following the dismissal of Michael Nees, and the response has been overwhelming.
Over 300 coaches from around the world have submitted their credentials, but Hughton’s experience with national teams and top-flight clubs in England has reportedly placed him ahead of the pack.
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi confirmed that the selection process is nearing completion:
“The process of appointing a coach is at an advanced stage. I think by Monday or Tuesday next week, we should be in a position to make an announcement.”
ZIMBABWE AFCON PREPS REVEALED
With AFCON kicking off in December, Zimbabwe are ramping up preparations with friendlies against Algeria on November 13 and Qatar on November 17.
Whoever takes the reins will face immediate pressure to shape the Warriors into a competitive force especially with a crucial group-stage clash against South Africa on the horizon.
