Appollis reveals special bond with Mofokeng that is benefiting Pirates

Orlando Pirates forward Oswin Appollis has opened up about his special relationship with teammate Relebohile Mofokeng, revealing how the two benefit from each other.

Appollis and Mofokeng were the key drivers for Pirates’ PSL title triumph as the Buccaneers ended a 14-year wait for a league crown and they are considered hot favourites for the Player of the Season award.

The former Polokwane City winger enjoyed a stellar debut season at Pirates as he also won the MTN8 and Carling Knockout. Appollis says he enjoys a good relationship on and off-the pitch with Mofokeng and it has helped them forge a great partnership.

“The relationship started because we are roommates and we are always speaking in the room about what we can do and improve ourselves and the team,” Appollis told Soccer Beat.

“I think sometimes it is just movement in the field. How we move, how the next teammate moves you know and how we move for them.

“So it becomes easier in the field but I think it also started in the room. There are a lot of clips and soccer that we watch so it all comes down to that.”

The relationship has been indeed great as Appollis scored 12 goals and added nine assists while Mofokeng weighed in with 11 goals and nine assists in the just-concluded season.

Relationship beyond the pitch

The attacking duo lifted the entire team, helping Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side clinch the title. The 24-year-old credits the camaraderie that exists between them for the high output on the pitch.

“PlayStation is there and then there are a lot of things we do speak about beyond football,” Appollis added when asked what he and Mofokeng do away from the pitch.

“But I think the relationship goes not even just at the club level when we go to the hotel, we also go out with our girlfriends to supper, we do speak, I go to his house he goes to my house so always created that relationship.”

Appollis and Mofokeng are currently in Mexico with Bafana Bafana as they continue their preparations for the World Cup and coach Hugo Broos will hope that that relationship is also extended to the national team.
