ASPL 2000 vs Durban City: CAF Confederation Cup Preview, Betting Tips and Prediction

Published on by

Durban City carry a two-goal lead into Sunday’s second leg against ASPL 2000 at the Complexe Sportif de Côte d’Or in Saint-Pierre, where a draw would put the Citizens into the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

ASPL need to win by two goals without conceding, or by three, which explains why Eric Tinkler spent the days after the first leg telling his players he was unhappy with the result.

The new Durban City coach wanted a clean sheet in Durban and instead saw a spilled cross hand ASPL the goal that keeps this tie alive.

ASPL 2000 vs Durban City Preview: Form and Context

Durban City arrive in uneven form, with two wins, one draw and two defeats from their last five games and no clean sheet in any of them.

They have conceded in each of those five and scored in four, which matters because a single Durban goal in Mauritius would force ASPL to score three times just to reach penalties.

League form is flatter, with seven points from eight Betway Premiership games, one win, four draws and a goal difference of minus two.

That makes the Confederation Cup the sharper opportunity for a club that won last season’s Nedbank Cup and is playing continental football for the first time.

They reached this round by beating Rukinzo of Burundi, winning 1-0 at home and 2-1 away.

The schedule offers little rest, with a League Cup tie against Stellenbosch on Wednesday, October 28 and a league trip to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, October 31.

ASPL lost the MFA Cup final to La Cure Waves on penalties but still earned a place in Africa, their first continental campaign in nine years.

They drew at home with Jwaneng Galaxy, won 1-0 in Botswana and then lost in Durban, scoring once in each of those three games.

The squad flew home on Monday, October 19 and went straight back to training, with the return fixture due to start at 17:00 local time.

Continental Watch: ASPL 2000 vs Durban City
First leg: Durban City 3-1 ASPL 2000 (October 18), so Durban lead by two goals. Away goals count if the aggregate finishes level, and with no extra time penalties follow. ASPL go through with a 2-0 win or any win by three goals, while a win by two goals that includes one Durban goal sends the tie to penalties. Durban City go through with a draw or a one-goal defeat.

Head-to-Head: ASPL 2000 vs Durban City

The clubs had never met before the first leg, which Durban City won 3-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday, October 18.

Haashim Domingo scored in the 15th minute, Gaston Sirino doubled the lead seconds after the restart and Tashreeq Morris converted a stoppage-time penalty after Roussety had replied for ASPL.

ASPL’s goal came when Fredrick Asare spilled a cross and Roussety finished into the bottom corner, exactly the kind of error Tinkler wants removed.

Durban were also wasteful before that, with Kyle Jurgens sending an effort narrowly wide around the 39th minute, so the lead could have been wider.

No other meeting exists, so the first leg is the entire head-to-head record.

ASPL 2000 vs Durban City Team News and Predicted XI

No injuries or suspensions have been reported for either side, although coverage of ASPL ahead of the second leg is thin.

Goalkeeper is the one live selection question after Asare’s error, with Tinkler welcoming competition for places since a new keeper, Marko, arrived.

Tinkler changed only two players from the AmaZulu defeat for the first leg, bringing Sirino back and playing Domingo in place of Ethan Brooks.

That leaves little reason to alter a side that created a string of first-half chances in Durban.

With Stellenbosch and Sundowns next, Thabo Nodada, Luphumlo Sifumba and Morris look the likeliest options to refresh the side from the bench.

The Managers: Tinkler Against ASPL’s Rebuild

Tinkler was part of the South Africa squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations and has coached Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Sekhukhune United and Maritzburg United, the club that became Durban City.

He arrived in early October after a short spell at Asante Kotoko in Ghana, replacing Khalil Ben Youssef, and has said the Confederation Cup was among the main reasons he accepted.

His competitive record in charge is one defeat and one win, a 2-1 home loss to AmaZulu on October 13 followed by the first-leg victory.

After that win he said complacency set in once the second goal arrived, adding: “From complacency comes wastefulness.”

On the other side, Clarel Beeharry, an assistant coach who has spoken for ASPL, says the club was “hovering around the relegation zone” when his staff took over at the start of the year.

The rebuild leans on youngsters from the Liverpool Academy setup, among them Stewel Beeharry, who scored in the home draw with Jwaneng Galaxy.

Tactical Preview: How Durban City Can See Out the Tie

Durban City lined up in effect as a 4-3-2-1 in the first leg, with Sirino and Domingo working between the lines behind Jean Lwamba.

Tinkler admits “we don’t really have natural wingers”, so width comes from the full-backs and from Sifumba, who has developed as a false winger.

Sirino and Domingo are both more at home as 10s than on the flanks, a point Tinkler made himself.

That narrow shape produced the best chances in the first leg, including an Alou Doumbia volley that Alcide saved and a Bandile Shandu cross that Lwamba failed to meet at the near post.

ASPL struggled to impose themselves after conceding in Durban, which makes an early Durban goal the most damaging thing that can happen to them.

Nodada’s arrival from the bench in the first leg strengthened midfield control, and a similar change would suit a side protecting a lead.
