Broos questions Zwane red card & insists Bafana Bafana ‘organisation wa perfect’ only that World Cup’s ‘level is much higher than…’

A nine-man Bafana Bafana fell 2-0 against 10-man co-hosts Mexico in Group A’s opener in the 2026 FIFA World Cup that started on Thursday night.

Coach Hugo Broos’ men were second best to El Tri, who were supported by tens of thousands who had packed Azteca Stadium. Strikes on either half by Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez were enough to hand Mexico maximum points in Mexico City.

South Africa coach Broos has strongly defended his decision to start with five defenders, before exuding confidence that his men will rise to the occasion in their forthcoming pool games against the Czech Republic and South Korea respectively.

Mexico were better than Bafana Bafana

I don’t think there was a drop in the standard of my players. It’s just that this level is much higher than the level we usually play at. We were up against a very good team today. We played against a strong Mexico side and, at times, I saw a desperate Mexico that didn’t know what to do with the ball. Our defensive organisation was perfect,” the tactician told Afrik-Foot in the presser.

“Offensively, though, we need to improve. We had opportunities, but the final pass wasn’t good enough and our runs weren’t always the right ones. That’s something we have to work on over the next few days. I’m sure we can play the same type of game, be better offensively, and get a better result as well.

“It’s not nice for both players to get red cards in the first game of a World Cup. But the first red card, you have to accept it. Their player was through on goal and Yaya fouled him, so I can understand that decision.

“The second one, I think there is room for discussion. The Mexican player blocked my player. It was the referee’s interpretation and we have to accept it, but in my opinion it was a little soft for a red card.

“Now we have two players who cannot play in the next game, but we still have a lot of players available. If we show the same mentality and play the same way we did today, I’m sure we can get great results in the next two games,” Broos added.

Why defensive approach?

“I think when you watched the game, you saw why I approached it that way. Apart from the first 15 minutes, when Mexico put us under pressure, the game was balanced. Again, Mexico looked desperate because they didn’t know what to do with the ball. Their two centre-backs were standing there with the ball at their feet, unable to find solutions,” the tactician defended his approach.

“That answers your question about why we played the way we did [on Thursday].

“There are still seven days before the next game. These guys are professionals. If you can’t recover in seven days, that would be ridiculous. I don’t think that will be a problem. I’m sure it won’t be.

“We need the next two days to get over the disappointment and the fatigue, but from Saturday or Sunday the players will be ready to train well again. We have to work on our offensive game because it wasn’t good enough today.
In a tournament, you can’t think too far ahead because anything can happen. For us, the objective was the same as it was a week ago: to survive the group stage. That is still possible.

“The start was not good and it wasn’t what we expected. We didn’t want to lose, but it is what it is. Now we have to try to get points from the next two games and then we’ll see where we stand,” Broos further explained.

Mexico were good but I believe in my team!

“One of the big qualities of the Mexican team is that, apart from maybe the players at the back, everyone is very quick, both offensively and defensively. You saw it on the first goal. The player who pressed our defender came from a long distance away — it was a sprint of about 20 metres. That is a big quality of this Mexican team.

“I think we managed it well throughout most of the game. Some moments were better than others, but overall we handled it well, and our performance was not so bad.

“Let’s say that I believe in my team. I have confidence in them and I knew they were capable of playing a big game today. They wanted to show the world what South African players are capable of, how good they are. I’m happy you say that, because it’s true. The Mexican players were desperate at times. They didn’t know how to find the spaces or how to find the free man.

“From our side, if our offensive play had been better, we could have been much more dangerous than we were today,” Broos concluded.
