Bafana Bafana are set for their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup fixture against high-flying Mexico on Thursday, June 11.

Mexico are co-hosting the competition alongside the United States and Canada. The game against South Africa will be a repeat of the 2010 edition in Mzansi, a fixture that ended 1-1 with the hosts South Africa eventually missing out making out of the group.

Coach Hugo Broos is hopeful of helping the country play in the knockout for the first time in their history, having failed to advance in all three previous occasions they have competed with the best in the world.

Bafana Bafana have been struggling to get positive results in recent outings. As a matter of fact, they have a single win from the previous six games across all competitions, two draws and a win. Mexico have six wins in eight recent matches, with two draws.

Williams adamant Bafana Bafana are ready for Mexico

“Yeah, I mean, they are an amazing team. They are highly experienced and have been part of the World Cups before. They’ve got the experience; they’ve got the players,” the skipper told Sporty TV.

“And the most important thing, they’ve got the supporters, fans, and the home ground advantage. And that is always key, so we’re excited, we will obviously analyse them. We will watch the games, and I think it’s gonna be a good game, we’re excited.”

“[Playing at the Estadio Azteca] is historic, it’s what it stands for in football. Words can’t describe how important that stadium is, and what it means not just to Mexico but the entire world, it’s amazing, I can’t wait to feel the atmosphere,” the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper concluded.
