Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insists his team deserved a ticket for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The South Africans needed late goals by Orlando Pirates star Thelente Mbatha to draw 2-2 with Uganda before beating South Sudan 3-2. They then beat Congo Brazzaville 5-0 at home but drew 1-1 away.
On Friday, Bafana beat Uganda 2-0 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala to go top of their group. They will be aiming at completing the job on Tuesday when they host the Bright Stars of South Sudan.
‘We came here in Kampala to win' – Broos
The 72-year-old tactician is delighted with the way his team played against the East Africans, and how they took their chances, especially after the pause.
“I’m very happy we won the game today, it was tough, difficult in the first half, we played too slow, and there was good defense from Uganda, but not many chances in the first half,” he told the media.
“We played better in the second half, we found the deep man easier, it was a problem for Uganda, we scored at the right moment, we came here to win, we came here to be first in the group, which we are and we will try to win the game against South Sudan to stay first.
Bafana don't need luck!
After beating a better Uganda side, Broos is convinced his team has no excuse for not completing the job against South Sudan. The Bright Stars have collected just three points from the five matches played.
“That is the normal thing you can imagine, it should not be nice if we lose that game on Tuesday, there will be a crowd [in Cape Town] so we will try to give them something nice with a win against South Sudan,” Broos added.
“It was important to win today, to be first in the group, nobody can say we qualified with luck, like some were saying after the defeat of Congo [vs South Sudan], we proved today, we don’t need luck, we can win games and can get 14 points, deserving to qualify for Afcon.”
