Banyana Banyana whitewashed by Denmark

Wafcon reigning champions Banyana Banyana were embarrassed by Denmark after falling 5-0 at the Aalborg Stadium on Friday.

The Desiree Ellis-led squad were using the game to prepare for the title defense in Morocco in 2025, but they found the going tough.

Thembi Kgatlana, Sinoxolo Cesane, Linda Motlhalo, and Hilda Magaia did not manage to secure travel permits to Denmark for the fixture.

The first half of missed chances

It was not an easy game for the South Africans as their hosts dominated proceedings from the first whistle. They controlled the proceedings well, denying Banyana Banyana possession, especially in midfield.

Goalkeeper Kaylin Swart did well to deny Jannie Thomson inside the first five minutes with the defense also doing their part to block a dangerous free kick moments later.

Banyana Banyana custodian had a good game in the first half, making some vital interceptions that kept his team in the game. Dangerous Thomson thought she had scored in the 21st minute but her effort came off the crossbar.

Despite the many chances created, South Africa, somehow, managed to keep a clean sheet.

Banyana concede five in 45 minutes!

In the 51st minute, the deadlock was finally broken by Isabella Obaze who capitalised on poor goalkeeping to head home a corner kick.

The second goal came in the 55th minute courtesy of Signe Bruun who danced her way through before finding the back of the net.

A minute later, defensive lapses allowed the attack to complete her brace from close range.

Substitute Amalie Vangsgaard made it 4-0 in the 64th minute after a cross found him unmarked in the six-yard area, and she comfortably beat the goalkeeper.

Svava was denied by the woodwork in the 73rd minute, but it mattered less as Denmark got their fifth courtesy of Katherine Kuhl two minutes later.

Banyana Banyana will now turn their attention to the England test on Tuesday at The Coventry Building Society Arena.
