Head coach Desiree Ellis has announced a 26-player squad for WAFCON 2024 as South Africa looks to defend its title in Morocco from 5–26 July.
The reigning champions, who lifted their first continental trophy in 2022, will rely on a strong local core — eight players from Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, including veterans Andile Dlamini, Lebohang Ramalepe, and Bambanani Mbane.
JVW FC contributes five players, while UWC adds four. TS Galaxy Ladies has two representatives, and six players are based abroad, including Linda Motlhalo (Glasgow City), Hildah Magaia, and Jermaine Seoposenwe (Mexico).
Notably absent is star forward Thembi Kgatlana who withdrew for personal reasons. Seoposenwe has confirmed this will be her final tournament.
Drawn in Group B with Ghana, Tanzania, and Mali, Banyana will aim for back-to-back titles with a blend of experience and emerging talent.
The tournament will take place in Morocco for the second successive edition after the 2023 campaign.

Banyana Banyana's Wafcon preparations
Banyana Banyana’s WAFCON 2024 preparations were briefly disrupted by a salary dispute with SAFA over unpaid bonuses from recent friendlies.
The players boycotted two training sessions over unpaid match bonuses from recent friendlies against Malawi, Botswana, and Zambia. Each win reportedly earns players R60,000, and the team had won all four of their last matches
With the matter settled, the team resumed training and played a friendly against Benin as part of their final build-up. Despite the off-field setback, coach Desiree Ellis’s squad remains focused, blending local and international talent while adapting to Morocco’s challenging conditions.
South Africa, drawn in Group B with Ghana, Tanzania, and Mali, kick off their title defense on 7 July. Riding the momentum of recent wins, Banyana are aiming for back-to-back WAFCON titles.
Banyana Banyana Wafcon journey
The defending WAFCON champions started their campaign with a 2-0 win over rivals Ghana to top Group C.
They then followed it up with a 1-1 draw against Tanzania, a match that Banyana Banyana struggled to find their rhythm despite the quality they had. However, they bounced back with a massive 4-0 win over Mali in their final Group C fixture.
South Africa will now play Senegal in the quarter-final on Friday, July 19. The West African nation was among the two teams that were the third-best finishers in all three groups.
It wasn't an easy outing against the Teranga Lionesses in the last eight hurdle as the West African nation wanted to prove a point.
They were the better team in both the regulation and extra time but were undone by good goalkeeping from Andile Dlamini as well as poor finishing by Senegal attackers.
In the penalty shoot-out, Banyana Banyana claimed a 4-1 win with the defending champions hitting the back of the net through Karabo Dhlamini, Tiisetso Makhubela, Gabriela Salgado, and Bambanani Mbane.
It wasn't going to be an easy outing in the semi-final against Nigeria, a team they had beaten 2-1 in the 2022 edition, but in the Group stage, it goes without saying that the West Africans came into the match, aiming for nothing but victory to avenge the initial loss.
In the stroke of halftime, captain Rasheedat Ajibade gave the Super Falcons a deserved lead from the penalty spot to ensure her side went to the break with a slim led.
Linda Motlhalo then pulled the nations level in the 56th minute from the penalty spot as well. However, in the 84th minute, Banyana Banyana forward Gabriela Salgado suffered a nasty injury that left her teammates shocked and in tears.
The Super Falcons won it in the stoppages thanks to Michelle Alozie's fortuitous long-range effort.
Banyana Banyana will now focus on a third-place playoff with Ghana, who were undone by hosts Morocco in another semi-final. The Black Queens lost 2-0 to the former champions in an initial meeting in Group C.
The game is scheduled for Friday, July 25th at 21.00 SAT.
