Benni McCarthy: Bafana Bafana legend receives presidential award in Kenya

Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has been feted for his work with the Kenyan national team.

McCarthy has been the coach of the Harambee Stars since March this year and in his 10 months, he has transformed the side, instilling professionalism and discipline while selection is based on merit.

He has experienced mixed fortunes results wise, having taken charge of 15 matches, winning six, drawing three and losing six. In competitive matches, the former Cape Town City and AmaZulu boss has five wins, two draws and four losses in 11 matches.

McCarthy had a great CHAN 2024 campaign

McCarthy’s best spell in Kenya came during the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) when they finished top of what was considered the ‘Group of Death’ that had Morocco, DR Congo, Angola and Zambia.

Kenya secured 1-0 wins over Morocco, DR Congo and Zambia as well as a 1-1 draw with Angola to make it to the quarter-final as the best team from their group but lost to Madagascar on post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

However, the manner in which he lifted spirits and got his players and fans believing has earned him a state award from Kenya’s President William Ruto.

Ruto conferred McCarthy with a Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) – Civilian Division, in recognition of his transformative work with Harambee Stars during Kenya’s Independence Day celebrations on Friday.

The Head of State’s Commendation (HSC), which has both a military and a civilian division, is awarded for commendable service to the country.

It is a significant honour that recognises individuals from all walks of life, including community organisers, entrepreneurs, and public servants who have made a notable impact.
