South African football legend Benni McCarthy has commented on the prospect of coaching the national team, with speculation mounting over who will succeed current head coach Hugo Broos.
Broos, appointed by the South African Football Association (SAFA) in 2021, has announced his intention to step down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup to return to his family in Belgium. His tenure will conclude after the tournament, regardless of the team’s performance.
The 74-year-old coach has led Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and is now focused on guiding them through the World Cup qualifiers. With his departure confirmed, SAFA is already considering potential replacements.
Several high-profile names have been linked to the position, including former Mamelodi Sundowns coaches Rulani Mokwena and Pitso Mosimane, alongside McCarthy.

The former Bafana Bafana striker has now spoken out about the rumours, expressing his interest in the role but also clarifying his preferred career path.
“I think a lot of people will be interested in the job to coach Bafana. But if I’m asked, of course I would. It’s my country. It’s the national team,” McCarthy told KICK OFF Magazine.
He praised the current squad, highlighting the quality of players available.
“There’s a fantastic group of talented players who are currently playing for Bafana,” he said. “So it’s a very good time to achieve things with this group of players, with the calibre and quality that they have.”

Despite his interest, McCarthy indicated that the timing might not be right for him immediately after the World Cup, citing his desire to return to the daily routine of club management.
“So, yeah, if the chance comes, I don’t see why I wouldn’t want to coach my national team. But maybe not the next job after the World Cup because I miss club football,” he explained.
The former Orlando Pirates star elaborated on his preference, stating he misses the day-to-day involvement with players. “For my next job, I’d prefer it to be in club football again… because there is too much time in between matches for the national team.”
McCarthy is currently the head coach of the Kenyan national team, where he is focused on preparing the squad for the 2027 AFCON, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
