Bobby Motaung justifies Kaizer Chiefs’ lack of January signings

Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung insists the club was right not to make any signings in the January transfer window.

Chiefs were quiet in the midseason transfer window with only one DStv Diski Challenge player Xhosa Manyana added to the squad at a time when rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns brought in big names.

However, Motaung is not shaken by the club’s inactivity and feels it was the right thing to do given the many players they brought in in the off-season.

“We are happy with the squad, we brought in a lot of new players (in August) and young players from development,” Motaung told The Citizen.

“We have a lot of competitions and some have not played even now. They haven’t been given a chance because of the depth we have.”

The Kaizer Chiefs boss further feels there has been camaraderie in the dressing room this season, leading to improved form and the club’s hierarchy thought new additions would disrupt that.

“We can’t complain about the quality of players, and the unity, the team spirit,” he added. “We thought ‘let’s not interrupt that’. New players can bring a change in the changing room and the mood.”

Chiefs signed 11 players in the off-season being; Flavio Silva, Ethan Chislett, Nkanyiso Shinga, Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Asanele Velebayi, Etiosa Ighodaro, Luke Baartman, Lebohang Maboe and Khanyisa Mayo.

Of the 11, Baartman only made his debut in their final match of the year while Chislett and Shinga are yet to feature competitively for the Glamour Boys.

Chiefs have seen an upturn in form this season as they are third on the PSL table with 30 points from 15 games, five behind leaders Orlando Pirates, and are on the verge of sealing a quarter-final place in the CAF Confederation Cup if they can avoid defeat away to Zamalek on Saturday.
