Broos on possible failure to qualify for AFCON: ‘SA will never see me again’

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed what he’ll do if South Africa fails to qualify to qualify for AFCON.

Bafana face Uganda away from home on 15 November 2024 and South Sudan at DHL Stadium on 19 November in Cape Town in matches that could see coach Hugo Broos’ charges qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Morocco next year.

It could still happen that South Africa fail to qualify if they do not exceed 10 points, while Congo secures victories in both of their matches and Uganda achieves at least one win.

BROOS SAYS HE’S NOT THINKING OF FAILURE TO QUALIFY

“It would be a little shame if we don’t qualify for AFCON,” he told reporters on Monday.

“Honestly, we have the quality, we are bronze medalists. Can you imagine that the bronze medal of nine months ago can’t even qualify for the next AFCON?

“So I’m not thinking about that because again, my confidence is big in this team, but we can’t. We can’t accept if we shouldn’t be qualified for AFCON.”

Broos stated that he will step down as Bafana coach if they fail to qualify for the continental showpiece.

‘YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME AGAIN’

“If we’d lose both games, five minutes after the game I’m on the flight to Belgium. You can be sure of it,” he continued.

“If we can’t win, ok Uganda [away is tough], but at home against South Sudan, I tell you I’ll immediately take a flight and you’ll never see me again.”
