Chiefs goalkeeper coach Mzoughi: My take on performance and what’s next

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs' goalkeeping coach, Ilyes Mzoughi, has weighed in with his comprehensive assessment of the Amakhosi's 2024/25 season, paying particular attention to the performance and challenges faced by the goalkeeping department.

The past campaign presented a duality for the Soweto giants; while they proudly lifted the Nedbank Cup, their league form was far less impressive, culminating in a ninth-place finish on the log table.

A significant point of concern was their defensive record, as Chiefs conceded an unacceptable 32 goals in the Betway Premiership, marking the third-highest tally in the league. Only Marumo Gallants (39) and AmaZulu (34) had poorer defensive statistics.

Moreover, the noticeable rotation of three different goalkeepers throughout the entire season serves as a clear indicator that the club has yet to identify a definitive “number one” shot-stopper.

This persistent instability in such a crucial position has, as a direct consequence, spurred Chiefs to actively scour the transfer market in search of a new goalkeeper to fill this void.

Speaking openly to the club's official media channels, goalkeeping coach Mzoughi articulated his detailed evaluation of the department's performance and the strategic path forward.

‘ALL OUR GOALKEEPERS MADE VARIOUS EXCELLENT SAVES’

“It was a tough season, not only for the goalkeepers, but for the whole team,” admitted Mzoughi.

“We were unlucky with some injuries and suspensions of our defenders, which affected the goalies in particular, and the team in general.

“Overall, I feel that all our goalkeepers made various excellent saves throughout the season, such as Bruce's (Bvuma) magnificent save against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-final or Brandon's (Petersen) mature performance in the final.”
