‘Chiefs should be imposing’ – Kaze and Ben Youssef slammed over ‘boring’ football

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Farouk Khan has expressed his disappointment at the style of football currently being played by the Glamour Boys.

Chiefs scraped through a 1-0 win over Zambian giants ZESCO United in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday with their overall display not good on the eye.

The Soweto giants struggled to string together passes while their approach seemed to be aimed at hitting their opponents on the counter-attack although they did not do it effectively.

Khan feels coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef are not coaching the players well and also do not have a specific style of play as they keep changing their tactics, leading to a boring disloyal.

Chiefs ‘lack specific game mode’

“Maybe we are expecting to see vintage Chiefs but the technical team is looking to play on the break,” Khan said on SoccerBeat.

“They are using the speed of [Glody] Lilepo and [Flavio] Silva into things and [Pule] Mmodi but they were ineffective because the turnover of possession at times, ZESCO looked better in build-up phases.

“They [ZESCO] had more possession, especially in the second half. I am saying you have to understand it if you have a game model, stick to the game model irrespective of when you play at home or away from home.

“You tweak it here and there but the team of the cailbre of Chiefs should be imposing. Not allowing themselves to be put in a situation where they change their tactics to suit the opposition,” Khan further stated.

Are Amakhosi boring to watch?

The veteran coach wants to see a Chiefs team that wins games in an entertaining manner and feels they have the players to do it but they are not being set up well.

“Chiefs cannot afford to play football that is just based around the result. They need to play a brand of football that we can marvel at,” added Khan.

“A brand of football that tomorrow in the morning when guys are in the taxis or in the trains, they are marveling and talking about a Tsepo Masilela darting down the flanks.

“We saw two full-backs that…we cannot expect [Aden] McCarthy to attack a lot but [Dillon] Solomons we know. He was hardly there, I did not see him.

Glamour Boys ‘lack movement’

“From midfield, [Mfundo] Vilakazi, they brought in the likes of [Lebohang] Maboe…there was no movement. It was just a case of transition football, you win the ball and turnover.

“As a fan, I want to see more, I want to see something that can really inspire me as a fan. Winning is important but it is how you win sometimes that matters, especially looking forward to your next opponents because you want to ensure there is consistency and continuity [and] that is missing at this moment.”

Chiefs are back in action against Marumo Gallants in the PSL on Wednesday before they host ZESCO in the return leg on Sunday.
