Kaizer Chiefs missed an opportunity to solidify their top eight spot after playing out a goalless draw with Cape Town City FC in Wednesday evening’s Betway Premiership fixture.
Amakhosi coach made two changes to the starting line-up from their victory over Stellenbosch FC, with Dillon Solomons replacing Reeve Frosler and Mduduzi Shabalala coming in for Pule Mmodi.
Chiefs endured an unsettling start, nearly conceding early on when Nathan Fasika’s close-range header from a corner was expertly saved by goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.
Subsequently, Chiefs began to exert attacking pressure, with the midfield and attacking players combining effectively on the edge of the six-yard box to pressure the City defence.
CHIEFS’ MISSED CHANCES
Around the half-hour mark, Amakhosi continued to probe, and Sirino, receiving the ball short at the near post, attempted a curling effort towards the far post, narrowly missing the target.
Shortly before halftime, Shabalala came close to opening the scoring after Fasika relinquished possession in his own area, but Shabalala’s shot drifted wide of the bottom corner.
Minutes into the second half, Lilepo came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, curling a shot from the edge of the area that struck the top of the crossbar, with Cape Town City goalkeeper Darren Keet well beaten.
Cape Town City responded with a dangerous attack midway through the second half, Fortune Makaringe’s first-time strike from within the area forcing Bvuma into a crucial point-blank save.
Both sides experienced periods of ascendancy and opportunities to secure a decisive goal, but ultimately, were let down by imprecise final passes, misplaced passes, and suboptimal decision-making in key moments.
Chiefs had a late opportunity in the final five minutes when substitute Pule Mmodi, positioned on the far side, curled a shot towards the top corner, only to be denied by a fine save from Keet.
Despite sustained pressure in the closing minutes, the Soweto giants were unable to find a breakthrough, and the match concluded with the scoreline remaining 0-0.
