Kaizer Chiefs’ inconsistent run continued when they suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Polokwane City at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.
Both sides started brightly but it was Polokwane celebrating a goal after 17 minutes when Oswin Appollis tapped in at the far post to break the deadlock.
Chiefs’ best chance fell to captain Yusuf Maart, whose long-range shot went wide, while Polokwane should have doubled their advantage on the stroke of halftime, when Appollis found Mokibelo Ramabu but he skied his effort.
After the break, Mfundo Vilakazi and Mduduzi Shabalala had efforts to get an equaliser for Chiefs but they were not strong enough to trouble Rise and Shine goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga.
How did Polokwane sink Chiefs?
Maart then tried to chip the goalkeeper just past the hour mark and they waited until late for another great chance which fell to Tebogo Potsane who brought in a ferocious shot that hit the upright with Sapunga rooted to his spot.
Polokwane completed the job in the 90th minute when Simon Ramabu slotted home from a rebound after Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen parried the ball into his path.
Defeat sees Chiefs fail to win two matches in a row after throwing away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Royal AM and they have now slipped to ninth on the table on 11 points, 10 behind joint leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
Polokwane, meanwhile, are now third on 17 points although they have played two matches more than the joint leaders.
