Kaizer Chiefs told to forget title any time soon – ‘Will be two-horse race for long’

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have been predicted to dominate South African football for a long time.

Pirates, who are the reigning Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions, ended Sundowns’ eight-year dominance last season after the two sides had pushed each other until the final week of the season.

The situation is the same this term as they are separated by a point, Sundowns leading the standings with 23 points from nine games, while Pirates are second on 22, having played a match less.

AmaZulu FC are third with 19 points, Milford fourth with 15 while Kaizer Chiefs have 14 points in fifth spot from eight games.

Are Chiefs among the title contenders?

While Chiefs have been termed in some quarters as title contenders, TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi, whose team has played both Sundowns and Pirates already this season, insists the race will only be between the leading duo.

“Over and above the performance, Pirates and Sundowns football wise right now are probably the best teams,” Sukazi said on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube.

“It is still going to be a two-horse race for the longer period in this league programme,” he added, making it clear that no other team other than Pirates and Sundowns can contest the title.

TS Galaxy boss thrilled by emerging rivalry

Sukazi weighed in on how his team has been performing against the two big sides, having lost 3-0 to Pirates last Tuesday, while they ran Sundowns close before losing 3-2 early in the season.

The Rockets had beaten the Brazilians 3-2 to dent their title chances in their final match of last season.

“We have played both and cumulatively in the last five games, we have beaten Sundowns three times, they have beaten us two times and probably we have become their nemesis,” he added.

“We have brought about a new rivalry in a match between TS Galaxy and Sundowns.”
