‘Defenders to blame for Chiefs’ goalkeeping woes’

Kaizer Chiefs have gone seven Premier Soccer League matches without keeping a clean sheet which is their worst-ever run in the club's history.

They have conceded 12 goals in South African top-flight football, and 16 in total in the nine matches featured across all competitions.

It was an unanticipated run, especially after the signings made in the defensive department during the summer transfer window. Goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari was signed from TS Galaxy, while defender Inacio Miguel, Rushwin Dortley, Bradley Cross and Bongani Sam were also brought on board.

However, it continues to get worse for the Glamour Boys who are rebuilding under coach Nasreddine Nabi.

‘It is a big concern for me'

On Saturday, Amakhosi threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Royal AM in the PSL game staged at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Brandon Petersen was in goal during that game.

Former club's defender Mokete Tsotetsi is unhappy with the entire team for failure to keep a clean sheet. He has further asked coach Nabi to consider giving goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma a chance between the posts.

“To be honest, it's a big concern for me. But remember, the goalkeeper has a big role to play. But it's not only about the goalkeeper because the defence also plays a big role and Chiefs have to work on finding the right combination at the back,” he told SNL24.

“It's easy for a goalkeeper to concede if the defence is not solid. It's not a good look for a team like Chiefs to be conceding in every game. I would like to see coach Nabi giving Bvuma a fair chance. Give him a few games and see how they can establish a solid defence.

“Going forward, Chiefs are good, but they are lacking in defence and it's something they need to work on. I feel that Bvuma can give Chiefs something,” Tsotetsi concluded.

The next fixture for Amakhosi will be away against Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
