Durban City set to sign ex-Chiefs defender

Published on by

Durban City FC, fresh off their historic promotion to the top flight, are reportedly making moves to bolster their squad, with Sekhukhune United's defender Njabulo Ngcobo emerging as a key target.

According to FARPost, the discussions are underway between the two clubs regarding a potential transfer for the 31-year-old, who appears to be seeking a fresh start after a frustrating single season with Sekhukhune.

Ngcobo, who joined Sekhukhune from Kaizer Chiefs at the start of the recent campaign, found opportunities hard to come by.

Under coach Lehlohonolo Seema, he struggled to gain favour, often overlooked in central defensive pairings. An unfortunate injury midway through the season further disrupted any chance of him building momentum, and he consistently found himself behind the likes of Daniel Cardoso, Tresor Yamba, and Katlego Mohamme.

Consequently, Ngcobo made only six appearances across all competitions – five in the Betway Premiership and just one in the Carling Knockout Cup – a far cry from the impact he would have hoped to make.

SEKHUKHUNE OPEN TO SELL NGCOBO

The report added that Sekhukhune United is amenable to Ngcobo's departure, and crucially, Ngcobo himself is reportedly very keen on joining the newly-promoted Durban City.

This mutual interest suggests that a deal could be reached relatively smoothly.

Durban City's ascension to the Betway Premiership was a testament to their dominant performance in the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship, where they clinched automatic promotion by topping the league with 58 points from 30 matches.

However, their moment of triumph was somewhat overshadowed by a prolonged legal battle. The club's celebratory trophy presentation was notably delayed by the PSL due to a dispute concerning the eligibility of player Sazi Magawana.

JDR Stars, later joined by Cape Town Spurs, lodged a protest alleging that Magawana was improperly registered by Durban City.

With the Dispute Resolution Chamber having now resolved the matter, Durban City is finally set to receive their Championship trophy today, Tuesday, June 10th, at 5 pm, with SuperSport 202 broadcasting the event.

The acquisition of an experienced player like Ngcobo would underscore Durban City's serious intentions as they prepare to compete at the highest level of South African football.
