Both sides opened their campaigns with victories and now sit level at the top of Group B on three points each. Egypt, record seven-time AFCON champions, needed a stoppage-time strike from Mohamed Salah to edge Zimbabwe 2-1 in their opener. Omar Marmoush had earlier equalised after Prince Dube’s shock goal for the Warriors.

South Africa, meanwhile, overcame Angola 2-1 in Marrakesh thanks to goals from Oswin Appollis and Lyle Foster. Despite being second best in the first half, Hugo Broos’ men rallied strongly after the break to secure a deserved win. The result has put Bafana Bafana in a strong position to reach the knockout stages for the eighth time.

Head-to-Head

The history between these two nations is rich and competitive. Including friendlies and CHAN qualifiers, South Africa have won eight of their 14 meetings with Egypt, while the Pharaohs have claimed four victories and two matches ended in draws. Their most recent AFCON encounter came in 2019, when Bafana stunned Egypt 1-0 in Cairo to eliminate the hosts in the Round of 16.

Players to Watch

For South Africa, Lyle Foster will be key. The Burnley striker struck the decisive goal against Angola and will look to trouble Egypt’s organised defence once again.

For Egypt, Omar Marmoush is one to watch. The Manchester City forward scored a superb equaliser against Zimbabwe and his partnership with Salah could prove decisive in breaking down Bafana’s backline.
