With Nabi gone and co-coaches in place, is Middendorp waiting in the wings?
Ernst Middendorp’s sudden departure from Durban City FC has reignited speculation about a potential third stint at Kaizer Chiefs, especially in light of recent developments at Naturena.
According to FARPost, the veteran German tactician left Durban City just three months into his strategic role, reportedly due to tensions with head coach Gavin Hunt.
Chiefs Clear the Decks
Adding fuel to the fire, Kaizer Chiefs have officially parted ways with head coach Nasreddine Nabi. The club confirmed that his two assistants, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, will remain in charge as co-coaches for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, a move many view as a stopgap rather than a long-term solution.
If recent incidents, such as goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari’s refusal to be substituted, are any indication, the current setup may be unstable. That instability could pave the way for Middendorp, whose availability and deep ties to the club make him a compelling candidate.
Middendorp’s Naturena History
Middendorp has twice taken the reins at Chiefs, most recently during the 2019–2020 season, where he came heartbreakingly close to winning the league title.
Though his tenure divided opinion among fans, his tactical discipline and intimate understanding of the club’s culture remain undeniable strengths.
