Former Bafana Bafana forward Sibusiso Zuma is calling for a local coach to take over Bafana Bafana when Hugo Broos leaves the post.
SAFA might be looking for a new coach by July after Broos hinted that he could quit and retire after guiding Bafana at the 2026 World Cup and a number of names have been linked to the role.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane and Broos’ assistant Helman Mkhalele are among those who have been heavily linked to the role and Zuma, who made 66 appearances for Bafana Bafana between 1998 and 2008, is of the view that a South African should be hired.
Zuma on why Bafana needs a local coach
“If Hugo happens to leave, we need someone local. It is always good to build with someone local,” Zuma told SoccerBeat.
“Because even the language, you speak the same language, you can reach even the young ones with the language and make sure that everyone understands.”
While looking to suggest his preferred successor for Broos, Zuma, who netted 13 times for Bafana Bafana, gave extra reasons why a local coach is needed now for the national team.
“You know football is so simple that you have a team and the team needs to understand the goal,” he added.
Has ex-striker endorsed Pitso Mosimane?

“What are we trying to do here, that is it? So a local guy, a guy like Pitso, I am not saying that we need to get Pitso, but a guy like Pitso is always going to pass that message easier than a Brazilian guy, especially when we are building,” added the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns forward.
The Bafana seat job is one of the most coveted in South Africa and Mosimane has already declared his interest while Broos named Mkhalele as the man he wants to replace him.
They will be big shoes to fill for whoever takes over as Broos has totally changed the outlook of the national team since he was hired in May 2021, instilling discipline, ensuring selection is based on merit while he has led South Africa to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (2023 and 2025) and also guided them to the World Cup for the first time since 2002.
