Ex-Chiefs fan favourite finds new home as Lesotho head coach

In a notable move, former Kaizer Chiefs fan favourite Jabulani Mendu is set to step back into the football spotlight, having been appointed as the new head coach of Lesotho's Linare FC for the upcoming season.

Mendu's commitment to the club is solidified by a two-year contract, with the exciting prospect of an additional year if both parties agree.

The management at Linare has not held back in conveying their enthusiasm, stating their firm conviction that Mendu is the ideal leader to guide the club towards significant future success and elevate their standing.

Mendu brings to the role a valuable blend of playing experience and modern coaching qualifications. He boasts a CAF A Licence, a certification he earned last year, which is a crucial requirement imposed by CAF for coaches aspiring to be on the touchline during continental inter-club competitions.

This qualification highlights his dedication to professional development in coaching. During his impactful playing career, Mendu was a recognizable figure, featuring for clubs like Thanda Royal Zulu, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Moroka Swallows before his retirement from playing in 2007.

The 48-year-old retired midfielder also follows in the footsteps of another South African tactician, as former Orlando Pirates coach Teboho Moloi previously held the coaching reins at the Lesotho club, back in November 2020, making Mendu the latest in a line of SA mentors to cross the border for this role.

MENDU ANNOUNCED AS HEAD COACH BY LINARE

“We are excited to introduce our new head coach, Jabulani ‘S-curl’ Mendu, with experience and a proven track record of success. Coach Mendu brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to our team,” said the club in a statement on Saturday.

“Under coach Mendu’s leadership, we are committed to developing talented players, building a strong team culture, and achieving victory on the field. Let’s give him a warm welcome and show our support as we embark on this exciting new chapter together.”
