Ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach identifies surprise solution for Bafana’s No.10 role

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has been given an interesting solution for the No.10 role.

Broos has started with Mbule in the position at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Angola but went more defensive against Egypt when he fielded Thalente Mbatha, Sphehelo Sithole and Teboho Mokoena before ‘MasterChef’ came in in the second half after the Pharaohs were reduced to 10 men.

However, Mbule has not set the stage alight as it was hoped and there already calls for him to be dropped for another creative player.

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant and development coach Farouk Khan has a surprise solution for Broos, telling the Bafana Bafana coach to go with Orlando Pirates winger Tshepang Moremi behind the striker ahead of Monday’s clash with Zimbabwe.

Why is Khan opting for Moremi?

“I’m going to think outside the box,” Khan said on Soccer Beat. “I’ll tell you what I’ll do. I will keep Mokoena and Sithole in the middle, I would start them again for defensive solidity.

“Up front, I would change a little bit. I would move Moremi into the 10 position. Play Oswin Appollis on the right and play Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng] on the left, and [Lyle] Foster up front.

“I don’t want to lose out too much because I can make a lot of changes. If you look at Moremi coming from wide, the Egyptians could not deal with him. They could not contain him with his pace. Can you imagine Moremi coming down the middle? Combining with Foster, Appollis and Rele. That could be a dream if it worked.”

Broos told to experiment at No.10

While it is a risky experiment, Khan feels it could spark something different in Bafana Bafana and change the course of their tournament.

“It is an experiment, you can experiment at this stage. If you need to make changes, you have sufficient players on the bench. We have got to think a little out of the box. We are thinking too pragmatically at times,” he added.

“Look at the player’s qualities. With Rele in the middle, he could be limited because of his physicality. He is better on the side, the defensive actions in the wide area are less congested.”

Bafana Bafana need to win against Zimbabwe to be sure of at least second place in Group B, having started with a 2-1 win against Angola before losing 1-0 to Egypt.
