Former Chiefs captain gives advice to new skipper Inacio Miguel

With coach Nasreddine Nabi naming defender Inacio Miguel as Kaizer Chiefs’ new captain, former Chiefs skipper Tefu Mashamaite has been discussing the qualities that make a good leader.

Nabi confirmed that Angolan defender Miguel will be the club’s captain from next season following the departure of Yusuf Maart, who signed for Austrian side SV Ried this month.

Miguel takes over the team’s leadership after just one season with the Glamour Boys although he displayed leadership qualities from the start and wore the armband a number of times last season.

With Orlando Pirates also set to name a new captain after the retirement of Innocent Maela, former Chiefs skipper Mashamaite has weighed in on what whoever wears the armband should have.

“There's different types of leadership, some people are upfront, in your face, ‘let's go and do this!' But some people spread nice energy in the room, without really saying a lot,” Mashamaite said on Jabu Mahlangu Diski Shandis YouTube Channel as quoted by Soccer Laduma.

“I believe I'm the latter, I lead by example. I don't think if you talk to most of the guys that I played with will tell you that I'm ‘nice' because once I step within the four lines, I'm a different person.”

Mashamaite then went on about the traits that make one a successful captain at any club, not just the two Soweto giants.

“I remember players I'm not gonna say their names that I played with, I made them cry because of how hard I went on them on the field. I have strong communication skills, once I get on the field, I'm a totally different person than the one you see on the outside,” he said.

I think it's just the matter of knowing when to talk, when to assert yourself, when to pull back. But the strong trait is leading by example, giving your best.”

With the Chiefs’ captaincy now sorted, attention shifts to Pirates where either of Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thapelo Xoki or Olisa Ndah are favourites to be named captain.
