Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic has now turned to the Premier Soccer League to help him get his overdue debt from Royal AM.
Thwihli Thwahla signed the Serbian in 2022 but his contract was illegally terminated in July even without making any official appearance for the club.
Fifa's Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), awarded the forward R10 million in compensation but the club has not yet paid the now 32-year-old.
Nurkovic now wants PSL to intervene
Through his lawyer Davor Lazic, Nurkovic has made a plea to the PSL to help settle the debt which has now accumulated to R15 million, with added interest. The monies will be deducted from the monthly R2 million grant to the club.
“They [Royal AM] need to pay the legal fees and of course the costs of the arbitration at CAS and they need to pay the main amount together with the interest, which is at five percent at this moment,” he told SABC Sport.
“What we asked, and this is according to their own rules, is to deduct from the money payable to the club. As you know, by virtue of agreeing to be a member of the PSL, it means the club authorized the league to deduct this money. All we are asking is for the league to follow its own rules and give this money to the player.”
How worse can it get for Royal AM?
In 2018, AmaZulu were docked six points by Fifa for failing to pay Namibian Phinheas Nambandi compensation on time after wrongful dismissal.
The case had been heard and determined in 2014 but Usuthu delayed in clearing their fine, attracting the punishment. Lazic now claims they might consider the same against Roya AM.
“We can also ask for further bans, which can be a deduction of points and relegation to the lower division,” he confirmed.
There are various other sanctions that can still be applicable on top of the transfer ban. But at this stage, it would be advisable for the league and the club not to follow this pattern as it would have affected the league standings and a lot of other matches already played. It’s best to pay the player.”
