Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for the defence of their PSL title after returning for pre-season at the end of June.
The Brazilians won an unprecedented seventh straight PSL crown with a record 73 points and nearly went the season unbeaten before Cape Town City secured a 1-0 victory on the final day.
However, Sundowns’ preparations were rocked by news that head coach Rulani Mokwena is in talks was in talks to leave the club.
The tactician was reportedly not aligned with the club’s transfer strategy while he apparently did not meet certain targets.
Afrik Foot, however, understands supremacy wars behind the scenes between Mokwena and Sporting Director Flemming Bird have left his position untenable.
Mokwena feels undermined by Berg who is ‘going it alone’ in terms of identifying the players to leave and join the club which has angered the tactician and having refused to abide by the Sporting Directors modus operandi, he has opted to leave.
It means Sundowns will be in the market for a new coach at a time when they are supposed to be focusing on preparations for the new season.
In Mokwena’s absence, first team coach Manqoba Mngqithi is overseeing training as they prepare for a run of fixtures in pre-season before the PSL kicks off in August.
