‘He isn’t going to jail in the US’ – McKenzie disagrees with Broos over Mbokazi’s MLS move

Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s transfer to MLS club Chicago Fire has received the support of Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.

Mbokazi’s move to the US has divided opinion in South Africa with some feeling the Orlando Pirates youngster should have waited for a European club while others think he is right to choose the MLS as it is what was the best deal available to him.

One of those who believe Mbokazi made a wrong decision is Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who made it clear that the MLS is a step down, and that he should have waited for the Africa Cup of Nations and upcoming 2026 World Cup before choosing his next club.

However, McKenzie feels Broos went overboard and he should let the young defender explore the US deal since it is a life-changing opportunity.

“The agent of Mbokazi did the best thing,” McKenzie said as quoted by Soccer Laduma, disagreeing with Broos, who claimed the player’s representatives were only looking after their own interests.

“Mbokazi is the highest paid. Nobody has ever been sold for that type of money in South Africa. Show me any other player that was paid that amount. No one.”

McKenzie then said Mbokazi is right to make the move as the US league will still give him a good platform to showcase his skills while he will benefit from the country co-hosting the 2026 World Cup.

“Why are we acting like Mbokazi is in jail now in the US league? The US league is one of the fastest growing in the world. We mustn’t underestimate it. The fact that the World Cup is going there brings attention to that league,” he added.

“Mbokazi is one of the greatest defenders I’ve seen. Whoever wants him should go buy him. If European teams want him, let them pay more. Mbokazi makes more money, everybody makes more money. I bless the move.”
